iRex on Mobipocket vs Adobe DRM

I haven't seen this mentioned here sofar: irex-drm-policy-mobipocket-drm-and-adobe-epub-drm-status/

Basically it is as was already suspected. Their Mobipocket license says no other DRM scheme can be supported at the same time.

No word on whether it also prohibits support for non-DRM mobipocket together with Adobe DRM epub.

No, it doesn't. There are plenty of readers out there that support both, where the epub is DRM'd, and the mobipocket isn't. But you can't use the mobipocket SDK (or I presume they use something like that) when you go that way.

Which is still a big reason for not supporting it at least in the near term. iRex basically is stuck using the SDK and focusing on other features of the reader in the short term. Perhaps FBReader is an option but that would still take time to integrate, and I'd imagine that annotation/scribbling is higher on their priority list right now.

You can only do it if you're using an "unofficial" viewer for the non-DRM mobipocket. iRex is using the official Mobipocket SDK, so they are not allowed to continue to use that, even for non-DRM.

Other devices that get away with it are using a 3rd party viewer for their non-DRM Mobipocket support (FBReader, etc).

You can already get versions of FBReader to support non-DRM Mobipocket for the iLiad and DR1000. I assume the same will be true for the DR800 once the code is opened up.

I know we can use unofficial software like FBreader to continue reading un-DRMd mobi's, but it would've been nice to have them at least take the extra step to clear up that part of the question as well. Now its still up in the air.

BTW, not to belittle the great job Adam has done getting it ported in the first place, but FBreader for the DR1000s isn't exactly well integrated yet, nor kept up to date much. I've been meaning to look into that if no one else (*hint* iRex *hint*) beats me to it, but currently I'm a bit stuck with trying to port a more recent version of evince with support for more than just djvu (but that's material for another thread).

I think iRex is focusing on the core functionality of their own software at this point, and not worrying about supporting 3rd party applications (which is probably a good thing). There may be a time down the road when their firmware is more mature and they start looking at things like official integration of FBReader, but I don't think they're in that position yet.
