Deals at the Sony Store

Stopped by the Sony store to see for my own eyes the difference between my 505 and the 600. I mentioned that I have a 505 to the clerk who then told me of the Sony "trade in" deal -- a $67 discount by trading in my 505. Then he added that the 600 was on sale for another $75 off. Bottom line, I bought a 600 for $157.99 post trade-in. Wow. That's a deal.

BTW, I went there to compare the two big issues I've read about here in the forums -- contrast and glare/reflection. My two cents. . .

Comparing the glare on my 505 and the 600 I did see some difference -- the 505 having a bit more of a matte surface. But, this was only really visible when I tilted both to maximize the glare. At a normal reading angle, the glare is not an issue for me because I always found I had to tilt my 505 to completely eliminate the glare anyway. Tilting the 600 to do the same is not new and not significant enough to even notice. There definitely is more glare on the 600, but not that will change my reading experience.

The contrast difference, however, is quite noticeable. The text on the 505 was darker, crisper, and more "on the surface" of the display. The 600 simply has less contrast, no bones about it. I wish this weren't the case. In fact, I've always wished the 505 had even greater contrast that it does. The 600 is undoubtedly a step backward in this aspect of the technology. So, I had to weigh the relative trade-offs and concluded that for my use, the extra features of the 600 are worth the compromises in the display. Clearly, this will be a personal decision weighing the pros and cons. I am hoping that I'll simply get used to the look of the text on the 600 and not be disappointed in the long run.

Now, if we could just get something that had a better display than the 505, faster page turns, faster navigation, 9 month battery life, the audio capabilities of the Sansa Fuze, and text to speech with the voice of Simon Vance, Timothy West, Donada Peters, or Nadia May. One can dream . . .

In the meantime, 157 bucks for a 600 seemed like a steal.

My major complaint with the 600 is the contrast compared to the Kindle.

Good deal though. Spent nearly double that for my 600..

Is the $75 off a Sony thing, or was it a while-you-were-in-the-store-this-visit thing? I actually just bought another 600 on Sat and I'll return it if I can get 75 off!

Congrats on ur new device! I think you'll love it, after a week you won't even notice the difference in the contrast

Heck if I were you I would think about selling the 505 on the flea market here at Mobileread. You could for sure get more the $67 (heck I'll give you $100) and the 505 is still a highly sought after unit...
