GEB1150 Won't Update Firmware

250 Coupe sent me a Smart Card to update my GEB1150. I've tried following the steps on eBook Technologies migration page, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Step 6 in the migration process says "Power the device on. It should take 3+ seconds to power on, and then it will re-install the firmware (this will be indicated by a bar crawling down from the top of the screen)." This doesn't happen. It comes up with the Gemstar ebook logo, and then shows a tab for settings, and that is it.

Any suggestions? The existing firmware is 3.1, BTW, if that makes a difference.

Dang, I hate when that happens!

Do the files show up on your card reader? There should be two and they should be in the root directory. There should be nothing else on the card, meaning I think it was clean but knowing me...

You might try powering it up without a card, powering it down again, inserting the update card and powering it on again. It may not be registering the fact that the card has been swapped out. You could also try holding the page down button while turning it on (upgrade card installed) to force it to read the card but I'm having second thoughts about this one as I type it. Probably nothing bad will happen but for some reason the thought fills me with foreboding.

Michael

PS, from what I hear, eBook Technologies does have a quick turn around time on upgrading it in house. You might send 'em an email to see if they have suggestions.

Michael: first, let me say thanks for all your help and support.

I did indeed send an e-mail to ETI, and got a response back this morning while I was at church. I'm going to try it out, and we'll see what happens.

I'll keep you in the loop.

Update: I tried what he suggested, and it worked. I'm up and running (at least with cards). Will try to access online bookshelf later. Thanks again.

Sweet!

Once you get it registered, I think you'll find the dictionary lookup feature is pretty cool. I'm 48 and an avid reader and I still look up several words a book.

Michael

PS, Don't forget to checkout the IMP books section in the ebooks upload area, scroll down past the reader forums.

Dictionary is a much-neglected tool that I need to start using. I definitely like the backlighting - it's what I've been missing on the Sony, and I think the ergonomics of it are hard to beat. I can't wait for my daughter to try it out, and hear what she has to say.
