Did anyone else pre-order their eDGe today?
I tried to wait until CES was over, but I am too weak. I loved my Kindle (sold it before Christmas) and my Sony 600 is nice, but I want something with a much bigger screen.
The Edge looks like it will be the best value for the price. |

I am very tempted. It seems good value; however, at just under three pounds I wonder if I would use it on a daily basis. I was looking forward to the Que but they will not ship to Canada.

I am a bit concerned about the weight, but for years I have carried tech books around with me and they weigh more.

The dualbook idea is interesting, but it's a bit on the heavy side, the battery life is too short and the screen is a little too small. Close, but no cigar.
Hope you enjoy your purchase though. ![]() |

I find it very interesting. No idea what the battery life is though. I would consider it a secondary reader. Basically a replacement for a netbook. Call it a coffee table book lol. But I think I would need a more portable one for other situations.

Here is a link to the best shot of the Edge what shows the size of the device with a sense of relative scale:
http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow_viewe...D21,00.asp?p=y it's a slide show so be sure and stop it after the page loads...but it's BIG... |

if it were a bit handsomer looking, I'd be tempted. As it is, I dislike that huge bezel.

And just how else would you hold a 3lb device? the bezel is needed and well proportioned to the way the device is designed to function. Larger devices pretty much need a larger bezel than your 6" device so you can hold them easily and distribute the weight to your hand and not only your fingers.

Disingenuous marketing. The hype says the battery "can last up to 16 hours of reading without recharging." You have to look at the specs page to find "up to 6 hours running the LCD screen". Real world usage is likely to be somewhat less. That means two to three recharges in a work day. That's a non-starter for me.

I'm tempted. The Que is out of my price range, as is the DR1000, and I imagine the Skiff will be as well. The Kindle DX doesn't have a stylus, which I would need, otherwise it seems like a nifty device as well. I would primarily use this at home, so although I would like a better battery and a smaller weight I think that this could be manageable, and I think the price is reasonable. I would like to try one out first, however, and I would also like to wait and see what other 9.7 inch devices are going to be announced.

He also said the goal was a whole day working on one charge. He did say that they assumed a person would not be working using the device at full power all day long so the 6hr number was very conservative. It really would be difficult to give an accurate estimate for the full power use, even though we know the eink panel draws almost no current other than the keep alive part of the circuit. Still, I agree because I dislike any ambiguity in specs...by this point they should know exactly and have proper and verified runtimes. And it's a gen1 device so I am willing to say, it's a wait and see how things are in November...still, the design and function are very interesting to me. I am also looking at that MSI device with a lot of interest because I really need a tablet/slate like device running Windows and two panels is very interesting indeed...I prefer the Edge design with one of each kind...but dueling PixelQi panels would likely not suck much at all. |
