PRS 900 RSS Feeds?

I read a post earlier suggesting the 900 could fetch RSS feeds over the 3G. Is this so? That would be fantastic, if it were true!

Not right now, I think that was more of a wish list than actual features.

Now, if Sony would follow suit with Amazon (who lets you e-mail documents to your Kindle for a fee), then something like Calibre could potentially be setup to e-mail scheduled feeds to your 900. But again this is just more speculation.

I'm kinda hoping Sony does offer this sort of service in the future though (the e-mailing of documents, or RSS), as I've currently got my own tool to generate PRS900-friendly periodicals for a couple RSS sources. The reason for the separate tool is that the PRS900 has some rather nice periodical-centric UI and organization features, but it only works if you have a bit of extra XML metadata in the ePub.

I figured it was too good to be true.

Thanks.

@Kolenka: Care to share what you know about the periodical specific UI. It could be added to calibre quite easily.

Well, I think the main problem is how Sony expects to recoup the bandwidth costs (which it does with subscriptions and purchases on the reader store). Amazon's solution to this was using the e-mail service so they could charge a small fee per document and pay for bandwidth that way (and get a few cents on the side in revenue), or offer up the feeds on the store in a digest form (and generate a little revenue for the sites in question).

I totally understand why they do not support the RSS feature. I just got excited when I read it.

Kovid, that would be a great addition to your fantastic software.

I'd be more than happy to pay a small, per feed, fee to have Sony collect, format, and send me the daily feeds I want. I think it would go hand in hand with the newspaper and magazine daily delivery they already have. It would let Sony control the formatting so there would be less risk of it looking like crap on the reader, and it would let them recoup some of the cost of the wireless. To me a reasonable fee would be in the neighborhood of $0.10 - $0.20 day, or even a flat $5 a month would be fair.

I agree, I'm personally hoping that Sony at least offers a means to send documents to our devices like Amazon does. I could at the very least modify my tool to e-mail the ePub output to my device automatically every morning and just pay the fee.

That would be fantastic. Hopefully, the fees will be reasonable, if implemented.

Catch is that it is Mac-only, and VERY rough around the edges currently. I literally threw it together over a period of a day just to prove to myself that it could be done. I've shared the details with Kovid so he should be able to integrate it into Calibre in the future (he'd have to speak towards what such a schedule would look like).

And my tool works on a similar concept to Calibre's recipes, so it won't just work on any RSS feed at the moment, and my recipes are built using Obj-C code (which currently needs to be built into the app), so it isn't exactly useful to the public at large just yet.

Hi Kolenka,

I am also a mac user, but after what you described, I'm not sure if I would know what to do with the information, lol. Hopefully you could write something up quick like instructions on how to use your recipes.

Thanks.

Well, the catch is still that the tool needs to run on a Mac, and anyone writing their own recipe needs developer tools installed (I only have The Seattle Times and Science Daily somewhat working right now). I'm not entirely sure where I want to take it right now, considering I'd have to re-write it to run it on a server.

Off topic, but another PRS 900 rumor: does the 900 completely drop support for lrf files, or just from the sony store?
