Test of Sony 3.1 software opening BN books

I ran a test of my Sony 3.1 software to see if it could open a DRM protected BN ePub book. I had purchased "Every Man Dies Alone" from BN first as a sample and then paid the full price for the book.

Both files were ePub. The first sample file was able to be imported into Sony 3.1 AND read - it was not DRM protected. The second file was able to be imported into Sony 3.1 but it could not be read. It sent a message, "not available for this computer." I deleted it from my Sony 3.1 Library and will just have to read it with my BN Desktop reader. Deleteing from the Sony Library did NOT delete the file from the disk even though it warned it would do so.

That's too bad since I was hoping that BN and Sony would share access to their books.

B&N uses a slightly different DRM scheme than Sony ebooks. Access may not be shared now but may in the future.

I have to believe within the next few years the DRM will be dropped as it has on most mp3 sites. The DRM only ends up punishing the customer. I have many eReader (pdb drm) books that I cannot read on anything but their software. Of course now they are a dying format, but I am stuck with their proprietary standard.

As a matter of fact the reason I bought a Sony instead of a Kindle is because of Amazon's trying to force buying from them only. I have been around long enough to know that DRM benefits no one.

B&N - no idea
PDB - very doubtful. Not sure if Calibre can convert PDB files - but certainly more likely than Sony ever supporting them.

There is now a way to remove DRM from a B&N purchased ePub.
