Notion Ink smartpad aims to be first Pixel Qi device
10.1" screen on android-based tablet, so plenty of bells and whistles for those who want them, but no mention of specific ebook reading support out of the box.

Thats good.
This way perhaps e-ink prices will have to drope, because there is only one company that can do it now. Do you guys know when will the patent of e-ink finish? It will be good to see the prices droping. |

This would make a fantastic magazine delivery device. B&N (actually eReader at present) have a beta stand-alone Android Reader, and the Nook runs Android. Amazon probably has an Android Reader in the works. I was arguing that vendors needed to get with the Android program based on momentum in the cell phone market, but I was looking in the wrong direction. Android is the clear early leader in the non-Windows tablet race. |

Wow... Just what I expected. Merry Christmas.
![]() ![]() This made my day. I couldn't find a launch date, but it seems we'll have to wait a bit, hard spec isn't final yet. |

Also the Pixel Qi screen doesn't really compare well against eInk in it's pure reflective mode. I see this device as a competitor to current tablets/notebooks, not really eInk.

Patents are for 20 years.
E Ink has over 100 patents related to e-ink, and add more every year. I'm pretty sure they started in the late 90s, so you've got a bit of a wait for even their first basic ones to expire. |

I agree that EInk has an edge as a large screen dedicated ebook reader, but the likes of the DR1000S and (even more so) the Que are also pushing into "tablet" territory. PVI will have to get the cost of an 9.7" EInk screen down to somewhere close to a Pixel Que screen if it wants to be in anything more than the executive toy market. This may be happening, the enTourage eDGe is $490 with EInk and LCD screens.

I got excited when I read that it can play 1080p videos. Unfortunately, they have to be down sampled to fit the screen's 1024x600 resolution (color). But mentions that reflective mode (no color) has three times the resolution... no idea what weird resolution that comes out to be, but it's higher than any available e-ink display.

Huh, so we finally have some specs on the displays themselves. 1024x600 for color is just a tad bit disappointing... though it's basically the standard for 10.1" netbooks anyways (with few exceptions).
I can't say I find this tablet particularly interesting. But then I'm really waiting for a Windows based machine. Last edited by Dylrob; 12-19-2009 at 01:05 AM. |
