Archive.org adds Mobi format for most of 1.8m books
I just found this on Resource Shelf:

For now, Internet Archive MOBI files are being made available through our web site only; Kindle readers seeking MOBI versions will need to navigate to the IA’s text archive to search for matching titles using device built-in browsers. MOBI files can also be transferred to the Kindle through a USB connection in situations where direct access is not feasible. Internet Archive public domain texts are not available currently through Kindle’s
online store or via Whispernet.

They've already had EPub for a while, Nate.

What they do is run the text files which are automatically generated from the PDFs into ePub and mobi converters. So the books will contain a number of OCR errors. But they are usually still readable.

Incidentally, they're now also offering Daisy format automatic audio conversions on their books.
