I've just started researching ereaders. Basic question.........If I purchase the Nook, am I limited to only books from Barnes and Noble or will I be able to purchase from other sources?

You can buy from anywhere that sells Adobe ePub or Adobe PDF, you can also buy from anywhere that sells eReader ebooks (and anywhere that sells DRM-free ebooks). All these will have to be "side loaded" via USB, rather than downloaded via 3G, and they are not integrated into B&N's infrastructure to sharing notes and your place in an ebook between devices.
