Can the Daily Edition hold at $399?????

Given the price reductions on the Kindle 2 along with the Nook and IRex becoming reality, how many people are going to be willing to drop the extra cash for the Daily Edition? For an extra inch on the diagonal you could get a good competitor or, if the shopper is patient, a Touch Edition plus a Pocket Edition combined for slightly more than the price of the PRS-900.

I know that there are those who look to the Kindle DX and say folks are willing to pay a premium for more real estate, but I sold my DX after I realized it cost more than a top notch Netbook.

Sony can be very stubborn about their pricing. They generally (maybe always) premium-price their stuff because they believe the Sony brand has value. I think it's unlikely they'll drop the 900 price.

I base this n experience in other areas (laptops, video cameras ...)

According to Sony the Daily Reader will also come with a cover and a case, just throwing a number out there I would give that a $40 - $50 value, based on the cost of them for other readers.

I would also not expect the price to drop, at least not initially. I think the best bet, if you can wait, would be to wait for it to get to other retailers and for them to have a sale or promotion that could be applied.

Forked over the money

I just forked over the money for the PRS 900. Amazon's Kindle has a keyboard taking up space and BN's Nook has an LCD screen taking up space.

Sony has it right with eInk reading space MAXIMIZED.

Plus, I already have the Sony PRS 505, a Sony shirt pocket camera capable of HD pictures plus 3 Sony HD TV's and have confidence in Sony as a brand.

Bestbuy already has it on sale for $360 + taxes (if you use Bing Cashback you can get 5% back, which is to say almost tax free depending on where you live!)

Yep and I think it's well worth it as I hold it in my hand. Download from the Sony book store is sweet (lightning fast). Fabulous screen (no keyboard taking up space). Loving it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony started offering the 900 without the Case Logic case that's currently bundled (the semi-rigid zipper case that comes in separate packaging). The separate packaging and branding plus the "bundle" terminology Sony uses leads me to think this. That could certainly lower the price $20 or $30.
