A popular Chicago sandwich/delicacy?
Anybody in here from Chicago/Illinois? I'm writing a scene in a Chicago diner and I need to know what sandwiches you like, or what's popular, or even better, what this man would eat...
."...he was a balloon of a man and just as shiny. Somehow, someone, somehwhere had tailored a suit to fit Grey's girth that didn't split under the pressure. Despite the extra tonnage he danced his way toward me like a happy twelve-year old ballerina." So? What kind of sandwich would a Chicago man of this description eat? Do you have a favourite sandwich? Is there a little known Chicagoan (?) sandwich/delicacy that even the mighty Wikipedia doesn't know about? Pics please ![]() |

Could a Chicagoan man eat that with his paradoxically small hands? As in a Calzone or something of that nature. (I was originally going with Calzone, as it fit the scene, but I thought it would be fun to have my only piece of research be about a sandwich

At Chicago's Marshall Fields Store, which is inappropriately labelled as a Macy's there is on teh seventh floor the Frango Cafe. There shoppers can stop for refreshment and fortitude before hitting the sales floor once again. There is a sandwich called the grilled turkey sandwich that is the best damn sammich on Earth.
It is made with cinnamon bread, thickly sliced turkey breast, swiss cheese, and cranberry mayonnaise. Grilled lightly and served with kettle chips. Followed by a Frango Mint dessert. Heaven! Nirvana in a booth! I make a trip to Chicago at least once a year just to eat there. |

Here's the expanded bit of the scene. Grey's delicate hands all but vanished under the foot long turkey grill sandwich. He brought it towards his mouth as a pious man might take Communion. His slitted eyes suddenly grew large and wet and filled with a mystical light. Wasn't so mystical. As Grey chomped down on the turkey grill I counted off the ingredients that fell onto his expensive suit; swiss cheese, turkey breast, cranberry mayonaisse. A forensic scientist would have a field day if they ever found Grey dead. A field day or a picnic, I couldn't decide. Last edited by Moejoe; 12-05-2009 at 11:50 AM. |

I'm a bit late to the discussion, and I'm a vegetarian so usually bad at these kinds of things. But my husband swears by the corned beef sandwich at Manny's Delicatessen. I don't know what the rest of the scene is about, but Manny's is where all the movers and shakers in town go. Obama stopped by there during the transition; I think Mayor Daley and his family hang out there. I've never been there (not really a vegetarian's dream), but I'm sure my husband could give you a good description if you're interested.
