You Have Been Warned (ebook reader/tablet in "2012" movie)
There's a scene in the movie showing a weathy Arab reading what looks like a medium sized tablet device, with smoothly scrolling white-on-black Arabic script (the scene is dimly lit so white text on black background worked very well). The film is from Sony Pictures, the sets are laden with Sony VAIO laptops so I'm guessing this is another Sony device that they'll be coming out with. Anyway, it looked very cool.
Perhaps others who happen to see the movie can supply more detail - I have no plans to see it again, wasn't that keen on seeing it in the first place... Last edited by tomsem; 11-16-2009 at 05:23 PM. |

I thought it was interesting that the device had autoscrolling text, rather than page turns. Then again, movies almost always misrepresent technology in favor of what looks good on the screen.
And for what it's worth I thought 2012 was a terrific popcorn flick. ![]() |

It would be sony. As soon as you see a brand/logo in a film (eg. Sony Vaio) you can bet Sony paid for the privilege and every other computer device will be a Sony.
If that's something that is coming out soon I'm excited! |

It always baffles me how TV and movie producers/writers surely use computers-- but have no clue about they are used and about the interfaces. For instance, ever since The Matrix, everyone is convinced that computer programmers are perfectly comfortable to read their code as multiple vertical lines of text constantly raining down their monitors.

I haven't seen (nor am interested in seeing) any of the Matrix movies, but I've seen many others that show something similar to what you're describing. Interestingly, it does work-for data, not for code. I can recall many times when I've browsed thru a dump or log looking for the anomalies that indicate where the problem is occurring. Sometimes it actually works.

Actually, what bugs me is shows like Independence Day where a programmer is able, within days at most, to write a virus that will infect an alien network. (I'm assuming it infected the network rather than the computer itself as networks are usually both more detectable & more vulnerable. Although the movie, IIRC, did specifically mention uploading it to the alien computer. Maybe poetic license, there.)
For one thing there's no inherent reason why an alien computer system should even be in binary. About the most that could be deciphered, assuming it's in binary after all, would be the op codes, and those are (were originally) assigned arbitrarily. Parallel evolution might work in biology (not sure but it might), but it'd be a miracle if it worked in computer languages. |

I noticed that part as well and found it funny
![]() That it showed scrolling text instead of page turns doesn't mean anything. It just looks better on camera. |

I just got back from seeing 2012 and took note of that reader as well. What surprised me more is that there wasn't a real Sony Reader in the movie based on a few statements made by the character Dr. Adrian Helmsley.
