SD card for sony 505

Hi

I bought my sony 505 from ebay and am really pleased with it.

Just wanted to ask about the SD card. There are two different sized card slots in the reader but I am not sure which SD card to get online and what size to go for. Also do I need an adapter for the card to be able to plug into the computer?

Sorry if the question sounds stupid but I'm not sure where to start for the ereader.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Sue

Each slot is for a different type of memory card. The following is per the instruction book:
  • The left memory card slot is for a Memory Stick Duo memory card, and it supports both Memory Stick Duo cards and Memory Stick PRO Duo cards.
  • The right memory card slot is for an SD Memory Card, and it supports both SD Memory Cards and miniSD Cards (the miniSD Card will require an adaptor).
The instruction book does give a warning that you can damage a memory card slot if you attempt to insert the wrong type of card into the slot.

Although I didn't find anything in the instruction book specifically indicating the maximum memory card size the reader supports, it says that it performs an operation check on Memory Stick Duo cards up to 8GB and on SD Memory cards up to 2GB.

I've been using a 1GB SD memory card in my reader and have not had any problems. When the time comes that I need to add more storage to my reader, rather that getting a larger SD memory card, I will likely take advantage of the open Memory Stick slot to add additional storage.

When I want to load files directly on an SD memory card (instead of through a device like my reader or a PDA), I've had to use an adaptor that plugs into one of my computer's USB ports. I'm a Windows user and my SD memory card appears as a lettered drive.

I hope that helps.

Also...depending on how you use your reader, you might not need a memory card of any type. I currently have over 150 full length novels (including two complete copies of the Bible) and still have plenty of room.

Many have reported that using the SD card can reduce the battery life between charges. In most cases this isn't a huge factor though. When I had a card in, I would still get at least two weeks between charges--with daily use.

Enjoy your reader!

I'm rather partial to the Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo since they are also used in my Sony PSP and Cybershot camera and no adapter is necessary. I've had no problems with the 1GB, 2GB or 8GB sizes in my reader. There are also slots in my PC to accept most types of cards, if not all.

With all these new super duper sizes coming out, they are clearing out the lower capacity sticks at decent prices.

I just bought 2 new 2GB ones at Staples (in-store clearance bin) for 10 bucks each. That's enough to hold all the books *I'll* ever need, plus an extra to back them up onto.

I like to buy my memory sticks from a reputable store, hoping to avoid any counterfeits.

(Anyone is welcome to chime in here with a better price or preference)

Thank you all so much. The information you have given has been very helpful indeed. I now know what to look for.

Although I have enough space on the reader for books, I wanted a memory card for more specific reading.

Thank you.

Just a bit of advice, for books stored in memory cards, the more books you have there the longer the reader would initialize it. This could take from a second (<50) to even more than an hour (>1000)!

The time issue for the memory card is only a factor when you insert the memory card. After my 505 crashed the first time, I moved everything to the memory card. Glad I did because my 505 died shortly there after. I inserted the memory card (up to 8gb works in the 505) and I was off and running before I got home to authorize the reader with my sony account.
