Read from Amazon with what hardware?

If I want to download books from Amazon, because of their low prices & large selection, do I have to have a Kindle? Or can one of the Sony readers get Amazon material? Or even the Nook, or something else? I'm mostly interested in mystery novels by popular authors. I know I can use a computer with the Kindle reader, but how about true ereader devices?

The only EInk devices that read Kindle ebooks are Kindles.

unless one properly neuters the Kindle format books. One of my perks for owning a K1 even if I pretty much never use.
