Question about memory on the PRS-300
Hello All,
I found this forum during my current search for an e-book reader. I am leaning towards the PRS-300 due to size and the screen (my brother has the 600 - is ok, but I think the 300 looks better). However, the one thing that bothers me about the 300 is it's lack of memory card slot. For the folks who have the 300 - do you miss the expandable memory? or am I making a mountain out of a mole hill? I have not had any success in finding a 505, and I would prefer to actually see the device before I buy it (apparently in Canada this is a bit of an issue as the only readers I have seen are Sonys). Anyway - I would appreciate any thoughts on whether or not the lack of expandable is worth worrying about. Thanks! GG |

If "yes", then you need more memory than a 300 provides. But I'm betting the answer is "no." |

I have approximately 560 books on my 300 right now, and just hit the 2/3 full on the internal memory. While most of the books are average-sized (approx 200 paperback pages), there are also a lot of much longer books, like a full Bible, all the Outlander novels (approx 900-1000 paperback pages each) and a bunch of quite long public domain classics.
So, I don't feel any lack of memory due to not having an expansion slot. oh, not sure if it makes any difference as far as how much space the books take, but they've almost all been converted to lrf format before being put on my reader. |

ditto over here; 300 books and less then half full.
Edit: just checked: less then 1/4. The average converted pocket seems to take less then 0.25 MB. Real large (1000+ paper pages) less then 0.5 MB. Considering the internal memory is 440MB and since I do not feel the need to carry around a full library I do not think the lack of a memory card is a dealbreaker ![]() Last edited by dura; 11-22-2009 at 12:58 AM. |

Thanks for the thoughts (and apologies for the long-winded question!).
Had pretty much decided on the PRS-300, but then found out the the Nook is about to be officially enabled for Canada (not sure if they will ship north of the border or not), and that one had definitely caught my eye. Decisions, decisions.... GG |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() BTW, the Nook looks petty cool, and may be a decent ebook device. (I haven't checked one out in person yet.) However, the small color lcd display is purely a gimmick imo. 99% of my ebook time is spent READING, with just several seconds between books spent on selecting the next book to read. So the fancy menu display/graphics is largely a waste of resources and battery imo. Ebook devices are mostly about reading screen after screen comfortably, like a book. And I bet that display chews up extra battery life. One of the best things about the Reader is its extended battery life--weeks between charges, so it is always ready to take along.
