Observation..
In the "eBook Library Software for the Sony® Reader (New Version 3.0.01)" notes on Sony's website here, we see this little message:

Using the PRS-500 with Windows 7 operating system or 64-bit versions of Windows Vista operating system will require a firmware update for the PRS-500.
Note: To be notified when the update is available please email us at feedback@ebookstore.sony.com with "PRS-500 Update" in the subject line.
This appears to imply that the firmware update in the works will also upgrade the PRS-500 via firmware to allow for driverless connection - the same way all other Sony Reader models currently work..

Good point. It also confirms that it will be a firmware update, and not a trade-up programme.
