Looking for Whitest and clearests.

Which device has the Whitest and clearest e-ink display? I'm looking for 6 inch or more display, Less the 350 grams, and a reasonable price.

You're pretty much out of luck...there aren't any white e-ink displays yet. Will have to wait a generation or two before something reasonably bright comes out.

As LDBoblo states, you won't find a white background. Pure white would actually not be best, as the best reading is just off white. Still none of the readers today really approach that standard. If you truly want the contrast of a high quality paper book, you'll not find it on an e-reader. That said, while I wish there was some movement towards that level of contrast, the e-ink offerings are fairly good. Still you'll have to actually go look at one (currently the Sony is the easiest to go see live & in person, at least here in the U.S.).

If you look at the matrix in the wiki, you will notice that many devices all use similar or even the same e-ink screens in any size. There will be some variation in number of contrast levels between 4, 8, & 16. There will also be some difference between those with resistive touch screens (not the wacom pen screens like IREXes, which don't have a touch screen layer over the e-ink display) and non-touch screens. Touch screens tend to degrade clarity some as has been discussed a lot about the Sony Touch. Whether or not this is significant is a personal judgment call.

You need to be more specific about what qualifies as a reasonable price, as my wife thinks spending a couple hundred on an e-reader is just feeding my silly gadget addiction rather than useful (although she has been known to read my Iliad occasionally when I'm not ). Also, you don't specify your location. If you are in the U.S., between Best Buy and Barnes & Noble you'll soon be able to see all the Sony's, the IREX 800, the B&N Nook, and some time early next year, the Plastic Logic Que.

I'm sure that there will be reviews by members here on the IREX & Nook when they come out who also have many of the other readers that aren't available at a brick & mortar store (like the Kindle 2, the Astak EZ Reader, etc.). There are already some comparing the current Sonys to these others.

So, while you can already go see the Sonys at several stores, you should have a few more options to actually see shortly. That plus comparisons you'll find here should help you narrow down the list.

I hope that helps some.
