Daily Edition Battery Life and Wi-Fi

There was a thread here somewhere (can't find it) about a month ago pointing out the PRS-900 being listed here on Sony's website.

But did anyone notice this page before?

It lists the battery life at a mere 1200 page-turns for ePub. In contrast, the 600 is listed at 6800.

That's a pretty steep drop off. It must mean with wireless turned on, but it doesn't specify.

Needless to say, I don't think 1200 page-turns would go over very well with most people. Hopefully the listing is a mistake.

Also listed on that page is this:

Wi-Fi : Supports HSPA, UMTS, Edge, and GPRS data services with two bands (850 and 1900 MHz).

I think that's the first official mention of Wi-Fi, is it not?

I wouldn't consider 1200 page turns a deal breaker. I have never found myself 1200 pages into a book w/out a source of power for recharging.

I imagine the inclusion of the term "wi-fi" is a mistake though. I think they just meant wireless capable.

That is correct, it will use 3G

I would. The 2 biggest benefits of the Sony Readers to me are the e-ink display and the fact that you DON'T have to constantly recharge the thing. It's much more like a book, going 2 weeks or more between charges (long enough for a vacation or business trip). Just adding a few new books (like borrowed library books) every couple of weeks is enough to keep the juice full.

I also bet that this figure refers to page turns with wireless OFF (otherwise they would quote a longer 'reading only' battery life), and that using the wireless will give this device a very short time between charges. Right there, that's a 'no sale' for me. (Of course, the wireless is a non-starter for me anyway.)

Maybe they mean ADE pages and not screen refreshes. What. ADE defines as a page is much larger than what the Sony will show on the screen at any given time.

Don't forget an e-reader page is not a bookpage; I've got 250 page pockets that have triple the pagesize on medium fontsize on my reader.
So 1200 pages could well mean one big book. To mee an absolute dealbreaker, unless of course the wifi can be turned of and pageturn/charge get's a more common value.

I think you "page turning" folks are pulling at straws with your philosophying. I suspect page turns simply means how many times you push the button to turn a page. The Amazon K2's I had never made 1200 page turns before needing to be recharged, with or without Whispernet running.

I would have preferred Sony to leave out the wireless as it will be next to useless, expensive, and 20 times slower than loading your books from the computer.

Well, that's the main benefit of the Daily Edition over the 100€ cheaper Touch Edition, isn't it?

Interesting. I think Sony should focus and delivering e-readers without all the bells and whistles. I love my PRS-300 just because of that. All I want is a "best as possible" screen, long battery life and sturdy enclosure. If Sony continues on this path of touch screen and wireless functionality, I will look elsewhere for my next reader.

It's 'convergence' - you can guarantee that in a few years ereaders will all have web browsers, wifi, 3g, online gaming, etc. - and crappy battery life.

Personally I don't see how wifi is an advantage.. I go to several sites and pick the cheapest place to get any book I'm after, which then gets backed up in a couple of places so it doesn't get lost before transferring to the reader.. you can bet the wifi version will be locked to the Sony Store, and there's a good chance it won't let you backup the books.

It says 12,000

That's pretty good IMO.. of course it's just a marketing figure. My 600 is currently nearly flat after 500.

Has anyone yet figured out where this size came from? I can't find any info about this size from PVI or E-ink and I've tried. Is PVI producing this size exclusively for Sony?

They have updated the web site. I will confirm that the linked page previously stated 1200 page turns.
