What do people think of this pocket pro cover?

Yesterday I got a terrible surprise when a coworker turned on my pocket pro and the screen was a spiderwebed disaster! Astak support was amazing in getting back to me in no time and are going to fix the reader for a very reasonable price.

So not wanting this to happen again I got to thinking about what my ideal scree n cover would look like. I had a coworker who is talented in CAD draw it up and I'm going to have at least one made. What I wanted to know is what do people think of this design and is it something others might want assuming it doesn't cost an an arm and a leg to build. Would people want to see any other features in a cover like this?

Nice design. Have you tested the readability of the screen with this cover in place?

Is that a handle I see?
What does it do?
How are you going to keep the plastic transparent with usage if it does not flip out of the way for reading?

You bashed up the screen inside the stock cover?
Good Grief! You guys are rough.

I had mine (cover closed when transporting) in my computer bag pocket, hauling it to work every day for a month and never worried about damage.

I won't be able to until it comes back from RMA. I have a Sony 505 as well and plan on doing some tests with various acrylics to see how readable it really is. We didn't do a rendering of it but the intent is you could clip the cover to the backside if you don't want the screen blocked.

The first unit may be 3D printed (I've always wanted to try that) which would make an opaque surface. If we can figure out how to do a bend as tight as the clip would need then it will be straight acrylic.

Astak always looking to protect the screen

Your design shows promise and Astak loves the idea of protecting the screen. You would be amazed how many broken screens come in where it is obvious they were sat on or dropped or driven over.

The factor is going to be is going to be how much it distorts or cuts down on light (meaning how much reflectivity is lost and what it does to straight lines. It may be necessary to use optical grade plastic.

Your design is good... now it is going to come down to materials.

Hardiest congratulations to get it this far.

Actually those are all just clips that go around the body of the case. I wasn't really thinking about a handle per se.

The goal is to use a thin clear acrylic to act as a shield that you could just read thru. If that isn't good enough though then I would want to be able to unclip it easily and reattach it on the reverse side.

I had it on my desk with the cover open and I'm assuming something bumped it just right. I didn't see the actual screen break happen.

I can't imagine breaking the display with the current cover in place. Certainly not without major impact or power of come type. How did it happen? I'd bet not much of anything would have protected it (for example as Robert says -- sat on or run over) not much of anything is going to protect against that sort of abuse.

And then there's the readability issue...

Robert,
your point on distortion is why I'm tempted to just make it opaque since if I'm crazy enough to try and sell it I anticipate lots of complaints on transparency. I've been using PDA's way to long and got the inspiration for the cover from the cover the old Handspring Visor used to use.

Lightbulb

I was thinking a flip cover that doubled as a desk stand (with a tilt) for hands free reading would be nice (and it would be harder for someone to set somethin on the screen).

Nifty idea I'll need to think on how to make something like that flipstand idea. I could see that being really useful on airplanes. I always seem to prop my ebooks up on random things on airplane traytables.

otterboxes are car proof, but I don't think they are bulletproof just yet!

You don't get broken screens with plastic logic (when it comes out that is)

You also probably wont have any money left in your account after you buy it :P No doubt there will be a premium added on to the price the plastic logic after release like all new technologies.
