Lightbulb Looking to confirm DRM compatibility

Hi all.

I am trying to confirm compatibility of B&N's DRM on ePub with Sony.

I was able to confirm that a book purchased from B&N does not work in the Sony reader software (it ignores the file). This is not surprising though since B&N's DRM is new and has yet to be merged back into the Adobe SDK.

It is much more likely that Sony's DRM ePubs will work in B&N's software. I tried to purchase an ebook from the sony store to try in the B&N reader, but I got an lrx instead of DRM ePub. I don't see anything in the store that says what format I'm buying when I purchase.

So one or the other:
1. Does someone have a DRM ePub from Sony that they can try in the B&N eReader software?
OR
2. Does anyone know how to make sure the book you're buying in the Sony ebookstore is ePub?

Also, my apologies if this has already been beat to death around here. I did a quick search and didn't find what I was looking for.

Edit: The file I originally downloaded from B&N was in eReader format, not ePub. The file I downloaded from Sony was lrx. Until either bookstore starts actually selling books in ePub, this question can't really be answered.

Sony do not currently sell ePub books. All the books from the Sony eBook Store are BBeB format (LRX files).

There have been some reports here on MR that some of the books they're now selling are ePub. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to tell which format a book is on their site.

I have seen mention of others downloading books from the eBook Library in ePub format but am skeptical.
I've emailed Sony Suport with the following questions and will post the answers if there is any response?
  • 1. Are any of the eBooks at the Sony eBook Store in ePub format or are they all still in secure BBeB (lrx) format?
  • 2. Is the switchover to ePub going to happen on one day before the end of the year or done gradually?
  • 3. How are we going to know which format the eBook is in when we select for purchase or download?

I was certainly under the impression that Sony were going to do a "big bang" switch-over from BBeB to ePub, rather than do it a book at a time.

I was too, but a few people have reported getting ePubs already. One mentioned putting them on his Pocket Pro, which you certainly can't do with LRX. Pablo from Tor mentioned yesterdays release of 'The Eye of the World' as being an ePub at Sony.

You can't use B&N's ebooks on Sony.

B&N's ePub is a confusing issue. You can read this post on Teleread about it. The comment by Jim Lester explains . . .

http://www.teleread.org/2009/10/20/b...omment-1147268

Basically, B&N's ePub will have its own DRM that isn't currently compatible with Sony's firmware (everyone else's too, even ADE 1.7). It'll be up to Sony to decide if they want to use RMSDK 9.1--the new version of ePub DRM.

My guess is that Sony will allow this since they already allow users to purchase ebooks from other retailers.

Also, it doesn't sound like this new version of ADE and firmware update will happen until early 2010.

You can't read B&N's ebooks on sony, yes. I confirmed this via the same method, and had that information about the versioning of Adobe's DRM.

You should, however, be able to read Sony's (ePub) books on the nook, or in the B&N software. Good to hear that Eye of the World is available in ePub . I will download that one tonight and try it with B&N's software.

Also I recieved a reply from iRex, and they will support (for sure) Sony *and* B&N's DRM on the DR800SG.

Well my purchase of "Eye of the World" didn't come in epub. Aaaand sad face I have nothing on my iphone that will read DRM LRF. Oh well. Guess we'll have to wait for Sony to switch over.

You can download a free DRM ePub from Adobe here. 'The Father Thing' by Philip K. Dick is encrypted with the standard ePub encryption used on Sony readers.

I downloaded Eye of the World with the idea it would be the most likely to be epub and also got an lrx book. B&N is still putting out ebooks in the old pdb format as of Friday, so they haven't switched over yet either. I've read a lot of conflicting information on various boards. Obviously, they can't all be right. I guess we will just have to wait until both actually switch over to see what works and what doesn't.

Okay, I understand that we will not be able to purchase barnes and noble ebooks for the Sony PRS 600, but my question is- will we be able to in the future?

And, what other websites/ebook suppliers besides Sony can we use for the sony ereaders?
I am looking to buy the sony touch ereader, and so far the only names I have heard floating around are the sony store (obviously), and fictionwise...

Does anyone know of any other websites I can buy books on? And are fictionwise books compatible with sony readers?

Thanks a ton for your help!

That's what the reports sounded like to me as well. Maybe they are experimenting/testing/trialing certain ones.

So epub format is already available on B&N ?

Sony will read existing DRM-Epub files -- provided you have registered the reader with Adobe.

Fictionwise, Project Gutenberg, and right here in the MR Library.

I asked this question to Sony Support, my question was:

"2. Will it support the new Adobe SDK for encrypting ePub so we can also read the new books from B&N?"

the answer was :
"In terms of supporting the new Adobe SDK, we're working on it :-)"

I guess they will deliver eventually a new firmware update when they start using the new Adobe SDK.

For the time beign B&N is selling only the eReader format and sony the LRX
