Bad memory?

Newbie here. I've checked older posts and seen nothing similar to this, but I'm hoping someone can help.

I have a PRS-700 and am having serious problems getting files onto the device. If I use Calibre or the Sony software and attempt to load an ebook (generally .pdf or .epub format), it takes up to 10 minutes and often generates errors, even for small files. If I try simply copying the file directly from my hard drive to the database, around 75% of the time it will not copy properly. I end up with a 0 byte file that cannot be deleted or renamed. I have to remove the device from the computer, then scan and fix it when it's reconnected, then delete the file. It sometimes take 3+ repetitions to get the file loaded onto the Reader. Once it succeeds, there are no problems with reading the file, so I don't think the problem is with the ebooks I'm loading (most are from Project Gutenberg). I have the same problem on two different PCs - one running Vista Ultimate 32 bit, one running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I have an SD card, and if I place that in my card reader and copy files manually to it, everything is fine. I load it into the Reader, it refreshes its database and everything works. It's just nearly impossible to get files onto the internal storage in the device. I've tried resetting it and formatting the internal memory repeatedly, but no change. At this point I'm thinking there's some kind of hardware problem.

Any recommendations?

You can attempt to format the device memory. This option is found in 'Settings'. You will lose a books and settings currently on the device.

Yes, I've done this several times and there has been no change.

I had similar issues with my unit. I think it was a too long USB cable without ferrite beads, and things improved after I replaced it. Or it could be some OS compatibility (I have Windows 7 RC currently). Either way, now I have PRS-600 and it works better.

Make sure you use the USB cable provided by Sony...they're real picky about what they like. Having a computer store, we have tons lying around & just grabbed one...wouldn't work at all. Took the Sony provided one & it worked like a charm...It has some sort of cylinder on it (don't have a clue what it's for), unlike a common USB cable. Guess it provides more 'oomph' that Sony requires.

The short ones and the Sony one I agree. My unit works fine with both of them.

The funny thing is that the Sony one DOES NOT work with a external hd, for instance.

Complains to Sony.

Regards.
