Question for people who know about handicrafts
While proof-reading my latest Dickens book ("Hard Times"), I came across this:

From what I can find it different than knitting, but possibly similar.
I found reference to some books that seem to indicate this... Misses Watts : The Ladies' Knitting and Netting Book for 1837 (1837 John Miland) Jane Gaugain : Miniature Knitting, Netting & Crochet Book (1843) Misses Watts : Selections of Knitting, Netting & Crochet Work (1843) Mr Hope & Mrs George Curling : Book of Babies' Wardrobe in Knitting & Netting (1844) http://www.booksandwriters.co.uk/wri...efore-1910.asp |

Thank you, that's very useful. By the sound of it, it's something along the same lines as knitting and crochet, but a little different. Is it a craft that's fallen out of use, do you know? I'd certainly never heard of it until I came across this reference!

Netting is a form of needle lace. The lace is stitched onto a mesh referred to as "net". See an example at http://lace.lacefairy.com/Lace/ID/FiletID.html
There are some instructions online. See http://www.geocities.com/monstonitru...eedlelace.html for a fair introduction. |

Thanks to all - I'm now a lot more knowledgeable about "netting" than I was half an hour ago!

No, but I had (wrongly) assumed that it was an old word for "knitting". It's always nice to be educated about these things. That's one of the reasons I enjoy reading 19th century novels - it was a totally different world then, and I'm always coming across interesting pieces of information, like this, and learning something new.

I"m currently reading all of the Poirot mysteries. I keep coming across "tisane" (his favorite beverage) and "Bath bun". Thats apparently something people liked to eat with their tea.
What the heck is a "Bath bun"?? I keep getting images of people eating in the tub.............. ![]() |

It's a sugary bread product. See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath_bun "tisane" baffled me for a while, too, but I recently learned that it's the French word for "herbal tea". |

Netting reminded me immediately of 'tatting' or 'tat', which I've encountered numerous times in crosswords. The history of 'tatting' in the wiki makes reference to a possible origin from 'netting'.
This is a very peculiar 'thread'. |
