Charging reader

I know that the reader (PRS-300) can be charged from the USB or a separate charger. I have a USB charger that I use on other devices with no problem. Can it be used on the PRS-300 without an actual computer connection?

No, it needs to register somehow that is connected to a PC.
Someone with more knowledge can explain it, but the answer is no.

You cannot use a USB charger from a power outlet.
It must be connected to a PC/MAC USB port.

Although if you have a SONY PSP, it can use the same charger.
Hope this helps for now.

I found a merchant selling an adapter cable for usb charging of inteligent devices. They have what I consider a reasonable explanation of why a normal usb charger won't work. I haven't tried this adapter, so I can't vouch for it, but it sounds like it might work.
I'd like to know. I have at least six old Motorola RAZR mini-usb chargers that might work with it, but won't charge the reader as is.

No, connecting pins won't help. This works with many mobile devices but not with Reader. It needs an actual USB host on the other side, not just +5V.

Has anybody tried charging with a 6vdc Sony noise cancelling headphones power supply? The plug looks the same.

What's the voltage and amperage printed on the power supply? You need 5.2 volts and (IIRC) at least 2500 mA.

I just read the fine print in the reader instruction manual and it states that you can not use any charger through the USB port other than a computer. I tried one and got the connected message but no red charge light. I then switched to the computer and the red light appeared. They must to some type of checking before allowing the charge circuit to start.

That was also my experience - although I did just discover that the USB port on my car stereo will charge my PRS-600, I guess it counts as a "computer".

Nuts! Now I'll have to buy an external charger so I can charge the device while on a cruise since I'm not bringing my PC.

That is what I was concerned about but my brother-in-law usually brings his computer. That was bad design having a separate charge outlet. The Sony mp3 player works great on the $5 usb charger. Even my GPS will charge with it.

Here are two options that will allow you to charge your reader.
I just bought a PSP AC charger for less than $4.00 (free shipping) on eBay.
I also built, but you can easily buy, a USB A male to DC plug (EIAJ-02) adapter cable. The cable takes the 5V from the USB port and connects it to the DC in jack on the reader. You can use the reader and charge from USB at the same time. The cable works with USB A female sockets on comuters, wall, and auto adapters.

Any idea where I can find the cable plus shipping at a price that would be less than buying the charger for $30? I looked at all the cables at a big Hong Kong gadget web site and could not find one.

Where are you located?

If in the U.S., check a Game Stop and ask for a refurbished PSP wall charger. They usually run about $7.50.

denmarks, grooks asks a good question: Where are you located? The availability of parts, and the shipping/tax/duty/etc., may depend somewhat on where you're ordering from.
My quick Google search turned up a couple of options.
Here is one site that sells a USB to PSP charge cable.
This one is cheaper, and has a combination of data sync and charge tips. There are a lot more out there.
I found another cable that is even cheaper on eBay. The seller is in Hong Kong.
