TCPMP V0.71b adds native AVC decoder

I received word from Picard today that he's been working on a native H.264 AVC (Advanced Video Coding) plugin for TCPMP, the popular multimedia player for Windows Mobile and Palm OS. Until now, AVC-encoded video clips were played through a stripped-down version of the ffmpeg library the ffmpeg plugin that comes with TCPMP.

You can download TCPMP V0.71b and the experimental AVC plugin from here. Note, however, that this is the first test release and it doesn't support a couple of AVC properties yet, such as CABAC and weighted prediction. Picard is also still working on adding WMMX support for Pocket PCs.

Other changes in V0.71b include: msvideo1 and cinepak decoder included, DIV3 decoder artifact fix, http/mms streaming fix (WinCE).

Picard pointed me to the following 480p HD trailer you may want to try with the new plugin:

Remember, this is just the first test version, so you may still have better results using the internal ffmpeg routines.

That X3 teaser link is only for showing how the decoder handles frame dropping :-) It's quality (848x352) is out of PDA's current league.

Alexander.... may I also stress that this is NOT a stripped down version of the FFMPEG plugin. This has been coded from scratch by Picard. In comparing it to FFMPEG and some of its higher end AVC features... sure.

I need to stress this as this codecs source code is NOT available to the general public and we have added a GPL exception to this.

Sorry about that. I could have sworn I read somewhere that the FFMPEG plugin is just a small subset of FFMPEG library.

Thanks for correcting me!

PS: Found the link again

Haven't updated in a while, but it seems now is a good time. I remember my installed version of TCPMP had issues with playing a few DivX movies that had special encoding flags (dunno remember the error message, but I can find out). Any news on this?

GMC and QPEL is still not supported by the ARM optimized mpeg4 decoder (just by ffmpeg, but it's very slow)

Those were the two, thank you. I've only encountered like two or three DivX movies using them, so support for it is not really a priority (at least to me).

You're probably missing the AAC plugin which was removed due to copyright issues. It's said that someone has hosted it here.
