Customize profile not working

I'm trying to add a background image to my Profile Customization.

I have the photo in an album and copy the URL of the photo in, and receive this message:

Main has invalid properties: Background Image

Most likely you have set the album where the background image is located as "Private".

In general, the following guidelines might be of use:

Upload the background image (that you wish to use) into your album. Make sure the album is "Public" or "Profile" (it cannot be not "Private")
In the customize profile page under the box "Main" you can notice "Background Image" with this icon click on it and your image will show up.
Double click the image and choose the option for "Repeat" and Save.

Hmm. The onscreen instructions did say the album could be Private.

Albums can be private, but to choose a picture for your background, it needs to be located in a public or profile album. Otherwise access to the background image would be restricted and nobody would be able to see it.
