Sony PRS505:To buy now or wait...that is the question!

Hi,

I want to get the Sony PRS 505 and I'm in Toronto, Canada. Right now Sony has reduced the price of the reader (on-line) to $299 which is a lot better than it's previous price of $349 (who comes up with these numbers!).
I also have a $50 gift card in hand. So the price comes down to $249 for me.

My question, should I go ahead and buy it now or wait until (maybe!) they reduce the price further to clear stock? or as promotions? or someone posts a discount/coupon?

As you can tell, I'm trying to get it at the cheapest price possible
But I don't want it to be discontinued while I'm waiting! Then I end up with nothing!

Also, I have a reader currently (the ebookwise). So I'm not in any hurry to get the new one. My only worry is that the item will go out of stock.

Any advice would be helpful!

Thanks,
Natasha

Edit: I was not able to find the 505 on the Sony US site. That is what started this thought process

Two days ago Dell Business had it for $224, but they're sold out now. $300 is way too much for an old model that was on sale last December for $200 at Best Buy.

Why not go with the 300?

Ideally I want to get it for around 200 (or less!). I've heard of many places that had it for sale at that price. But I heard it a few months too late
Also, I think the Dell you mention is the US one. I saw that post in the deals section (if I'm not mistaken). After doing the price conversion, I end up with around 246 and change. That is without including the shipping. So it wasn't worth it.

@wachuko: I prefer the bigger screen

I got mine a few weeks ago. The quality of the screen in the 505 is amazing. No wonder people use it as the standard to measure the other offerings...

I decided to go ahead and buy one. When I went to order online I realized that the sony gift card can't be used on sonystyle.ca! grrr!

The Sony store near my place only has the on-display readers selling for $299. So tomorrow I plan to go shopping downtown

Note that PRS-505 seems to be out of production, so you best get it while it's still in stock.

The PRS-505 has exactly the same screen as every other eInk device on the market. It is no more and no less "amazing" than any other .

If you want a 505 as I have ,just get it..you won't be disappointed, trust me. I went to the Sony store and saw the two new models and I still wouldn't trade my 505 for either one of them..Just my personal opinion. I wanted a reader, didn't want touch screen , don't need to scribble notes, just a reader with a very clean screen, easy to handle and most important carry with me in a purse. But what ever you choose I'm sure it will be the best one for you. Happy reading

I finally bought one! Thanks a lot for your advice guys and gals!

It was quite an adventure getting my hands on one! Apparently, it's sold out in Toronto. The only ones available (if at all!) are the display pieces. I had to go to the outskirts of Toronto to get a brand new device. It was the very last piece too! Just when the clerk was ringing in my sale, a lady came in asking for the reader! I felt quite bad taking the last one. But I was happy I came in before her!

Also had some trouble with the Fry's website while trying to buy the reader. The following thread has the details about that. I won't bore you with it

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54943

Right now, waiting for the reader to finish charging. Already installed the software and downloaded a few books. Also transferred the books to the reader. Now just have to wait a little longer till I can start reading!

Thanks again for helping me decide!

This is my dilemma. Assuming I need a new one, I really really want to see the 600 and 505 side by side, in person. I don't need the extra features of the 600, but I don't mind them, as long as I find the display good enough. And since people have judged it to be "fine" and also "good, but not as good as the 505" and also "not good enough", I need to see it for myself. The problem is that of the Sony Style locations near me, only two have 505s in stock (and the display copies at that) and only a different one has the 600 in stock (the others are getting theirs next week.)

I'm really reluctant to buy either without doing this side-by-side comparison. At the same time, if I wait until next week, I may be without the option of buying a 505, which would really suck if I decide that's the one that I want.

Maybe you can buy the 505 for now. Next week, go to the store with the 600. Compare them side-by-side. If you like the 600, return the 505 and buy the 600. If you like the 505, keep it

Once the 505's go out of stock, it might be more difficult to get them and the side-by-side comparison is going to be even more difficult....

Edit: I just noticed that under devices you have listed the 505. If you own one already, why don't you just take that to the store to do the comparison?

There's the rub I have a 505, which broke and is currently in the shop. The tech said that, based on the part that is broken, a repair will cost ~$50 using existing parts, and more than the price of a new reader if he needs to order new parts. So my first choice is that my existing 505 get repaired, and I'll happily use that, and maybe buy a 600 next year some time if I like it.

But assuming my 505 costs more to repair than it is worth, my options are another 505 or the 600.

errrr, not true, Harry. I've looked at 5-6 e-ink devices recently (lessee, Sony 500, 505, 300, 600), and a Kindle and a Kindle 2. Even though they are all e-ink displays, they are NOT "exactly the same. In fact, each one looked different than all the others in some aspect (background, blackness, sharpness, contrast). The 300 has the whitest/sharpest display I've seen, with the 505 not far behind and and Kindle 2 not bad. The 600 and 500 had the lowest contrast/sharpness.

The e-ink displays in various devices are not exactly the same, not by a long shot.
