Hey eh!

Hey everybody, I'm a new mobile read member and am from Canada. I saw some threads for people saying hi from down under thought I'd start one from Canada! That way we can complain about how we're right beside the US and how we still can't get a kindle and what not. Its okay though cause I just put in my order for a new PRS 600. Hope its all its cracked up to be!

Hey dtrain, ya hoser, welcome to MobileRead, eh!

I just checked out the PRS-600's at the Sonystyle store yesterday; I'm sure you'll be satisfied. It's a good improvement over the PRS-700 (minus the lighting) plus you get the features of the built-in dictionary lookup and freehand note-taking. The clarity of the screen is not as good as the PRS-505, but in my opinion the touch screen interface and all of the other features make up for this difference.

With the on-board memory and expansion slots you'll be able to store more eBooks than you can read in a lifetime. I usually delete the eBook from my reader after I read it anyway, there is a backup copy on my PC and I can usually re-download any purchased books.

Canadians have easy access Sony's eBook store, but some titles are available in the US only. There are several other sites you can purchase eBooks from in formats that can be read on the PRS-600. You'll have to experiment with different eBook formats to find the one you like best. Sony currently sells the LRX format, a DRM'd form of the BBeB format. They are also expanding to include the DRM'd ePub format what can be read on a lot of other devices and is prefered by a lot of our members.

Some of our members avoid buying any DRM'd (Digital Rights Management) eBooks because they are concerned, if the company goes under, they won't be able to gain access to their purchased books. You can read all about DRM in a *lot* of threads here at MobileRead (MR).

There are a lot of free public domain books at MR that have been well crafted by our members and are available in multiple formats. I also have access to the British Columbia library system which has a large collection of eBooks to lend for a 21 day period.

I download Sony's eBook library and had it populated well before I received my eBook reader. If you don't like Sony's eBook library, you can just use it to purchase books from Sony's eBook store and install Calibre to manage and format shift any non DRM'd eBooks. (Just don't have both of these applications up and running at the same time.)

If this is sounding all too technical, it won't after you read through a few threads. The MobileRead Wiki, available at the top of each page, is also a great source if information.

Ask away here if you have any questions. A PRS-600 forum will be set up soon, in the meantime most of the questions regarding that model are in the PRS-700 sub-forum (you can post any questions there also) and a lot of it is currently in the News and Commentary sub-forum since the device has just been announced.

Enjoy the forum, eh!. It's always great to welcome another Canadian member.

Hi dtrain and welcome to MobileRead. We'd let you lot buy and use Kindle's but, first you have to stop sending those Alberta Clippers down here!

You just need to learn how to live with it, sheesh!

Hi Dtrain, and welcome to Mobile Read! I'm from Québec, and really proud to say that the Canadian contingent on MR is fairly impressive!

Enjoy the forum!

Welcome to MobileRead, dtrain!

I'm with cassidym, you can keep the cold weather!!

Anyway, I am sure you will like the Sony much better than the Kindle. I love my 700 so much that I'm even planning on getting the 600.

Happy Reading!
