Sony already charging CC for PRS-600

I'm not sure where to post this, or whether it already has been mentioned in one of the several hundred posts on the new Sony Readers--if so my apologies.

Yesterday I pre-ordered a new Sony PRS-600BC. I have never ordered directly from Sony before, so I'm not sure what their standard procedures are. However, most companies that allow you to pre-order an item, or even order a stocked item, usually do not bill your credit card until the order is processed and ready to ship. I noticed that Sony has already billed my credit card. I'm not sure if this means anything, but it might mean that they are confident the Reader will ship soon. Or it could just be the way they do business--bill now, ship item sometime in the undetermined future.

I've not yet received the promised email from Sony about the Reader being available, so I suspect they are billing early.

You might want to give them a call and ask. I'm under the assumption it should be ready to ship once the order gets processed since they already announced the product yesterday. I went to Sony's website and I don't see pre-order on there any longer and appears ready for purchase.

In the USA, I believe they can only bill when the order is shipped. This might mean your reader is on the way! I ordered the Red and it's been shipped.

SonyStyle no longer lists the 300 & 600 as back ordered.

I checked this morning, and my card hadn't been charged. However, I got an email about an hour ago saying that my two red 600s have been shipped. I can't wait!

I just got my shipping confirmation email, so I guess they were simply processing it. That is nice surprise because I really didn't expect to see it shipped before September.

The red is still in stock...the black and silver say Pre-order now.

Apparently I got very lucky as I ordered my 600BC on Tuesday. I thought about pre-ordering way back when they were first announced, then thought it best await the news conference to make sure the rumors were correct. I checked the Best Buy website yesterday and some of the new Readers were listed as available and some as backordered. At least sony shipped the first ones before their self-imposed August 31 date. As I recall, most people who ordered the first Kindles had to wait months for their backorders to be filled. I'm sure hoping this new Reader blows my Kindle2 out of the water. I think it will.

I just came from the Sony store here in Manhattan and they already sold out. (it must be awsome to sell out of a product that technically is not even on sale yet). They said they are getting shipments in every day, but not sure if there will be 600s in those shipments.
PS: they have pleanty of 505s and 300s.

Supposedly bricks and mortar stores will be getting them in stock the 31st. Sony must be shipping so customers who order online get them roughly the same time as they're available in stores.

Glad everybody's getting their new devices shipped out so fast. I can't wait to hear your impressions. I'm very curious to see how the 600 stacks up to my 505. My device works perfectly after 2 years but I'd like the option to take notes. If the screen doesn't suck too much, I'll be upgrading.

So far I'm very impressed with the 600. True, the screen is not as crisp as the 505, and it does have more glare, but it is very readable and the glare can be easily managed.

One thing I noticed is how fast it is. In side-by-side testing, a PDF file took the 505 7 seconds to turn a page whereas the 600 turned the same page in the same PDF file in less than a second.

ePUB books still do not display in full justification, at least not the one book I've tried so far.

More glare on the 600? NOPE! The 505 and 300 have more glare then the 600. I did a very good compare in the store withthe very bright lights and easily the 600 had the least glare.

I must respectively disagree. First of all, this a relative issue. What seems like glare to one person might not seem like glare to another, or vice versa. Secondly, very few people live in a store with dozens of horrible florescent lights. Most likely the average person has tungsten lighting more prevalently in their home than florescent lighting. Since they are different wavelengths of light, they reflect and refract differently.

At any rate, the glare issue is easily resolved in two ways: (1) Tilt the Reader a bit to make it go away. (2) Get used to it over time. Just like it takes a while to get used to a much stronger eyeglasses prescription, or your first set of bifocals, your eyes wil naturally adjust to the differences between the Reader screens.

Even though I personally find the screen to have more glare and to be less crisp than the 505, the 606 has a pretty darn good screen. It is very readable, no blurry text, no fingerprint issues, very sharp text.
