HELP!! I think I'm out of authors...

Ok, y'all, this is SERIOUSLY disturbing. I can't find any new (to me) authors to try! I've been through cozy-mystery.com's list, I've gone through "recommendations" at Amazon to see what they came up with, and I'm not coming up with any authors I have yet to either hear about or have already read everything they've released in the cozy mystery genre!

I'm not as well-read in the urban fantasy department, though, and I know a bunch of us here like those - does anyone have any recommendations for me along the lines of Yasmine Galenorn's Sisters of the Moon series, or Rachel Caine's Weather Wardens?

Have you tried the e-books uploaded here? There are a lot of obscure but great books in the forum.

shel, have you ever tried literature map?

You type in the name of a favorite author and it gives suggestions.

Have you tried Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs (Moon Called, Blood Bound, Iron Kissed etc), or Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead? These two authors are my favorite writer. FYI, vampire academy is much better than Stephanie Meyer's Twilight

Some of my favorites are Edmund Crispin and Amanda Cross and I would say they both write cozy mysteries.

For free mysteries, you could also try Munseys: http://www.munseys.com/detail/mode/cat/18/Mystery
or Maywrite Library: http://home.epix.net/~maywrite/golden.htm

This is a good site for speculative fiction.

http://greatsfandf.com/authors-full-list.php

The guy's a bit of a snob but he does recommend plenty of authors I've never heard of and some I love (Peake, Tolkien).

If you are interested in trying some new genres or authors go check out the MR book club nominations for the past 5 months or so. Lots of good recos there.

Some PUF (paranormal & urban fiction) authors that I've enjoyed reading:
  • Christine Feehan
  • Charlaine Harris
  • Jeaniene Frost
  • Angie Fox
  • Jes Battis
  • Ilona Andrews
  • Jennifer Rardin
  • Patti O'Shea
I also stumbled across some new (new-to-me) SF/F authors that I can recommend:
  • Steven Harper
  • James Alan Gardner
  • Brandon Sanderson
  • Daniel Abraham
  • Alan F Troop
And, I have to recommend Dennis Batchelder's Soul Identity and Soul Intent. Both are available from Amazon for the Kindle and from Smashwords in other formats. Problem with these will be that you'll be right back here soon asking for more to read!

A couple of non-genre authors that I can recommend are Ann B Ross, Alexander McCall Smith, Joshilyn Jackson, Sandra Dallas, Joanna Trollope, Kaye Gibbons, and Jodi Picoult.

Last edited by Elsi; 08-23-2009 at 05:24 PM. Reason: Duh! Jaz Parks is the character, not the author. Changed to Jennifer Rardin.

Thanks Elsi! Most of these I have either heard of or read, unfortunately. However, I'm off to look up Jes Battis and Patti O'Shea and the S/F authors you listed. Am I the only person in the world who can't get into Jodi Picoult?

I would take a look at the Douglass Preston/Lincon Child duo. I have read all their books and loved them all!
