jetBook upgrade instructions shortened

Check it out!

Quote:
1. Make a backup copy of books, audio files, and pictures that you store on your jetBook.
2. Fully charge the jetBook battery.
3. Download and unpack the firmware package and then transfer the Data, firmware, and reflash_nor folders to the root directory of an SD card. Make sure your SD card does not contain any files other than those found in the firmware package.
4. Place the SD card into your jetBook SD slot.
5. Press the Reset button. The device will turn off. Do not turn it on.
6. Press and hold the On/Off button and right arrow key simultaneously until the jetBook logo appears on the screen.
7. The update process will take about 10 – 15 minutes.
WARNING! Do not press any keys on your jetBook while updating is in progress!
8. When the update process is complete, press the Reset button. The device will turn off.
9. Press and hold the On/Off button for 3 seconds. Release the button. jetBook will start within 1 minute.
10. Firmware update process is completed at this point.
They must have figured out how to get it to reset to defaults automatically. Either that, or it's not really needed.

Thanks for the info on this.

This is definitely a lot better. Removing that 2nd step is good news for the sake of further simplicity.

Nice to see that they must have listened to our pleas to simplify the upgrade process. No more standing on my head, with several fingers poked into various places

Question:
Do you lose the preloaded books when you do a firmware update on the JBL? I downloaded the firmware to my PC and found the BOOKS folder to be empty.

It's a precaution to be followed, since the upgrade routine can be changed or behave differently due some necessity.

If you do a backup and nothing is lost during the upgrade, you lose the 10 minutes from the backup.

If you don't do a backup and all important and hard to find documents that you may have stored are lost, you are short of luck.

I followed all the instructions for upgrading and the system's settings still show that the firmware is 15d. I am using the right update package since the dates on the folders are 8/13/2010.

My problem might be in step 7. How do you know when the update process is complete? Do you just wait 15 minutes and assume it is done?

Step 6 should have you keep holding the right arrow after the Jetbook logo page, until
a conformation page comes up asking if you really want to do the update. You are
then required to answer yes by pressing the "OK" button.

When step 7 is done you will see another screen message telling you to reset and
restart the Jetbook. If you aren't seeing these messages and haven't pressed the "OK"
button when asked, then you haven't done the update.

Luck;
Ken

Thanks again Ken.

The update worked. Ectaco should hire you to write the user manual.
