Disposable e-paper
I dont think that this technology has been up on mobile read before
it is a swedish company that has developed a printeble paper display that should be very cheap to produce. I dont know how far they are but I guess they are targeting the newspaper industry. I think that they are using real paper as one of the materials. they boast with Disposable! 0.005 €/cm2! Low voltage! Low power! Sun light readable! High viewing angle! In other words e-paper that is dirt cheap to produce (6 inch screen would be less than 1 euro) and disposable (I am pretty sure that you could dispose of a Kindle also if you want...) They dont mention on their frontpage that it has "Switch time, ts < 10 sec" or 400 switches or 12 months before it breaks. So NO, it wont really work as a ebook reader, unless they make like a real book out of these pages and then you update the whole book at once and read it without switching page more than once. (the paper looks like it can bend very well), then you would only need to buy a new e-readerbook for every 200th book or so. But it would be as thick as a normal book.... I am a bit sceptical, but hey it might be great ![]() http://www.paperdisplay.se/tabid/2197/Default.aspx |

Thanks, it look perfect for magazines. I am sure the life will improve. I built a wiki article to capture this for the future.

Anything that's considered to be "disposable" isn't that great. The last thing our ecosystem needs is more disposable products.

How low is low voltage and low power? How thick is it? Flexible? Is it along the lines of the Esquire cover, where the text is preset, or can it includes pixels?
Your book idea would be neat. Still wouldn't be cheap. Most books are 9"x6" (octavo) format, and if you figure 300 pages, that would work out to be 3,240,000 square inches for 81 euros ($115 USD). That is just for the display, and it would be a nightmare to control all that. |

Just look at the several broken (i.e. disposed) screens we've heard about here that cost roughly $90 to replace. How many of them would have welcomed a $2, user replacable screen that would average lasting 6 - 12 months? |

yeah the book idea is perhaps a little bit to expensive but perhaps the same thing with a newspaper, so you have your NY times that has the same format and around the same number of pages every day, you buy a year subscribtion on it and you get a paperdisplay-newspaper that will be updated every morning with new information. That would be pretty cool.
and here is the link for the specs http://www.paperdisplay.se/Specifica...S/Default.aspx 3V, 140µA for switching and 10µA for keeping the image. It looks very flexible and very thin. |

The samples show whole blocks of this material connected to just one set of wires, it doesn't state whether you can make small pixels of this, and if so what the cost would be. Seems more appropriate for large outdoor advertisements than magazine ads or books.

I'm very skeptical... they are 'disposable' like any other plastic trash that will sit on the planet for 20'000 years until it finally degrades (in the meantime choking 100 dolphins). We don't need disposable crap we need things that last longer than 4-5 years and can be recycled.

this is great. low cost but yes, since it is disposable .. it is not really that good for the environment.

So it is too expensive and material hungry to be used like paper. But it doesn't last long enough to use like other epaper displays.
It is the worst of both worlds! It doesn't even last as long as paper. |
