my cybook is frozen :(
i'm so depressed - my cybook has frozen. i plugged it into my computer as it was coming on, and it never got past the second screen. it was at 90% charge, the light lights when it's plugged in to charge but not otherwise, using the reset did nothing. nothing is showing in "my computer".
i admit i did unplug it to reset it, but nothing was showing where i could select to disconnect hardware as it had not shown on my computer at all and the hardware thingy had not appeared on the lower right of my screen. the unit is over a year old with 512mb and has no sd card in the slot, with around 275 books total. at this point i'd happily flash the firmware, but my computer doesn't know it's there. i have no idea what firmware is in it - 7something, i think. i'm letting it fully charge at the moment since i have no better ideas. strangely, the suspicion that it's my own darned fault fails to cheer me up very much ![]() |

Forgive me for asking, but the "reset" button just turns it off. Have you pressed the power button to switch it on again?

it never turned off. the second screen just hung there, whether i hit reset or power, and i tried them several times each.
HarryT - i swear you're good luck! not only do i agree with 99% of your posts, but i just tried the power button and it finally worked. my ebook is loading and soon i'll be reading. hooray! |

What HarryT means is that the reset button turns the processor off, but you see no change in the screen (since the screen remains in whatever state it was, and it takes no power). The only change you can see is if the LED was on, then the reset button should turn it off. After the reset, you power the unit on as usual, and then you see a change in the screen, that's the usual and expected (once you know how eink works) behaviour.

then when the cybook is on and you push the power button, why does the display stop displaying?

Hmmm, the easiest way I know to explain this is through an analogy. I hope you know what an "Etch-a-Sketch" is?
There are two ways to provide power to an etch-a-sketch (EAS). 1) You can turn the knobs and draw on the screen. 2) You can shake the EAS and erase the screen. If you don't provide any power the screen stays fixed on its last image. Apply power by either turning the knobs or shaking it and the screen changes. Just like the EAS, once a 'picture' is on an e-ink display it stays there unless power is added. Even if you want the picture to disappear you need to add power in order to make it disappear. When you hit the power-off switch or the reset button, the Bookeen engineers had to decide how to turn off the book reader. For example, they could leave the screen unchanged and simply turn off the power. But if the screen doesn't change how do you know if the button press worked? Is the book really off, or did you fail to hit the button correctly? The Bookeen engineers chose to clear the screen to tell you that the system is off. This is a sign to you that you hit the button correctly. However, it actually takes power to clear the screen before the system shuts down. So the blank screen is not a sign of the power going off. It is simply a user interface trick that is used to tell you that you hit the off button correctly. |
