Woot.com - 169.99 Netbook, 8/17

I know there are some Netbook fans out there - Woot.com's daily woot today might appeal:

Asus Eee PC 900 Netbook with 1.6GHz Atom Processor

$169.99
+ $5 shipping

It looks like it's new, not refurbished.

(for those who don't know, Woot.com offers one deal a day until it's sold out, and then the next at midnight the next day and so on and so forth until the end of time or until a WootOff, whichever comes first)

I just got a netbook a couple weeks ago. I was REALLY close to getting one of these the last time they popped up, a month or so back, but I opted for a Lenovo S10e, because it had a 10" screen, and better support for OSX.

Still good prices. I just paid considerably more for one of the latest models (MSI U123), with just incremental improvement.

Pennydie, well, Solid State Drives aren't cheap. Different style of tech from the run of the mill hard drives.

As far as linux, well, many of us here LIKE linux. Was one of the first things I did when I got my netbook. I like not having to pay the $100 Microsoft Tax. Wish I could have avoided it on this machine.

rixte, thanks for the heads up. Bought it sort of on a whim. Don't really need it but seems like a fairly inexpensive learning vehicle: changing RAMS, DIMMS (not even really sure what a DIMM is!); maybe really get into Linux, which I really never could with my XO.

Besides which the WOOT bloggers had lots good to say about it. And, of course, FBReader.

Besides which I'm now a WOOTER. Which is nothing to sneer at at my age!

You can be a wooter at any age Make sure you check it every day. If you see a bar at the bottom and spinning lights, that means a wootoff! Once that item sells out, then a new one comes up. Sounds lame, but is extremely addictive (and popular). And if you see a brown bag, BUY IT.

A bag of crap of course!

For $8 you have the pleasure of waiting two weeks to get one (1) bag (not a brown paper bag) and three (3) or more random craps. It could be anything - there's been an anvil, and an entire box of screws, to flat screen TVs and Dysons (for the very fortunate).

Sounds stupid, but it regularly crashes their servers when they come up.

I have received two bags, and my most recent one had many awesome things in it, including a full set of wireless phones, a talking Ronald Reagan doll, 3 sansa players (one with about 1,000 songs on it already), a laser pointer, and about ten laptop straps (which I was puzzled on what to do with them at first, but then found out the laptop bags many of my coworkers were using had horrible straps, so I made quite a few people happy).

They are usually spotted at the end of a wootoff or on holidays.

Hmmm, don't think I care to pay import duties on an anvil or a box of screws..or even a TV which I don't have and don't want.
Maybe, just maybe, a talking Ronald Regan doll!
But thanks for the info.
