Tulane Univ E-Textbooks -- Conflict of Interest?

Tulane Univ. has announced they are increasing the number of textbook titles available in digital format.

http://tulane.edu/news/newwave/081709_textbooks.cfm

The article contains a curious irony. It states:

"To download the book, a computer or reading device like the Kindle, which has a starting price of about $300, is also necessary."

At the bottom of the article, however: "The Tulane University Bookstore is a Barnes and Noble college store location."

One wonders about the formats and DRM for the textbooks.

Book details say "VitalSource Bookshelf". I don't think any ebook readers support this.

Edit: some of them mention "Adobe Digital Edition". That would cover Sony Reader, but I doubt it can be read on the Kindle

Most college textbook stores are owned by Barnes and Noble, but B&N doesn't really deal with the textbooks. Just an FYI. But, knowing college publishers, they will be extremely expensive and DRM ridden.

No, they're run by B&N, not owned. And that is only about 400 bookstores out of thousands of colleges and universities in the US.

Thanks for clarifying. I knew their role in operations was minimal. I thought they ran more stores than that though. Guess I was just thinking about the big schools.

The article says you need a device "like" the Kindle. However it looks to me like the e-book store in question (run by MBS, by the way) uses Adobe Digital Editions. Presumably the author of the article chose "Kindle" because she expect the audience to know what that is, as opposed to an Astak.

I'd also assume the relevant contracts were signed long before B&N's ebook store was ready.

Where did you read that? It sounds like CourseSmart policy, not VitalSource.

It is CourseSmart; sorry about that. The Vitalsource books (or at least some of them) seem to allow printing "with no limits," so they could be PDFd and then (with much hassle) converted to other formats.

ETA: Some VitalSource books expire: Preparing for the SAT Mathematics
