Barnes and Noble ePub support?

Did I read correctly? Does the new B&N ebookstore use ePub format? So these are usable with the Sony 505? Why is the PRS-505 not listed as a supported device?

Where did you see something about B&N and ePub? I just spent 10 minutes or so browsing all over their online store and looking at the FAQs and the only format I see supported is eReader.

This article states that B&N announced an ebook store with only epub titles...

No, what it actually says is that B&N announced that it would launch the store with epub titles, not that B&N had launched the store.

Yes, that is exactly what it said... Since I went to the site and the store was launched I guess I mistakenly assumed it launched with epub... not that it would relaunch with epub at some undetermined date.

Actually, I missed that statement in the PC World article. It reads, "In addition to major publishers backing ePub, Barnes & Noble--the self-proclaimed world's largest bookseller-- announced in July that it would launch a Barnes & Noble eBookstore featuring only ePub titles." I'm going to assume that when this store is launched, they will list support for the Sony readers, EZ Reader, BeBook, Cygen, and other readers listed in this thread.

FictionWise (B&N) has a medium term (~ one year) plan to add ePub capability to its eReader reading software, and switch from eReader format with eReader DRM to ePub with eReader-like DRM. The details of their strategy has not been revealed, but it does appear to include an alternative DRM for ePub (not Adobe).

This strategy has never been formally announced but parts of it have been revealed in various informal ways. The B&N ebook store "ePub" announcement is further confirmation that this strategy is still in place.

Sure would be nice if they would share this information with their customers. I've been asking them if/when they were going to support ePub every couple of months and have repeatedly gotten a "no plans" answer.

I'm a bit concerned to read that their DRM might not be the same as that used by other ePub publishers ... doesn't exactly lead to the interoperability we all would like to have.

Which means that their books would not work on any ADE device .

IF they HAVE to have a separate DRM scheme from ADE, here's hoping that theirs and adobes licensing agreements allow for both schemes to be on the same device...

Yeah, and pigs will fly too.

Even if it does, that won't help anyone with an existing device. That's the real issue. I've always said that the "bolt on your own DRM method" aspect of ePub is one of its major weaknesses.

If the licensing allowed it, what's to stop manufactures from upgrading the firmware of existing devices?

I have to agree though that the whole issue will most likely get very messy very quickly

There are still restrictions on the manufacturors. Usually for the different DRM formats, the SDK gives you pretty much a ready made app for using with it, and you have to shoehorn your other stuff around it. Well, you start to have too many of these, you'll run out of space to store the binaries, since most embedded devices have a separate chip for the firmware, one that has much less space. The PRS-500 users are worried about this problem right now. The firmware update to add ADE support was not released for the 500, due to space restrictions.

B&N can go kiss my ass. They are taking eBooks and making a mess out of them. We don't need or want yet another DRM added to ePub. We don't want any DRM. But if we have to have DRM, we want just one DRM.
