Fascinating! I've heard of very few of the ones in the lists I've perused so far.
Even when I recognise the author, the book is often unknown to me. Lots to explore - ![]() |

The taste in bestsellers seems to change very little over time. For example in the 1920s there is a run of Zane Grey books -- he wrote about the American west. Many of the books would today be classified as "romances."
Some time back a member posted the bestsellers from around 1900 in the download section. I started a few of them and could not finish them. Then again, I can't finish any of the modern romance books either. Good find on the lists Trilby. |

Agreed that this is very interesting, but are these the best-sellers in the world? In English? In any particular country? The article doesn't give any indication of this.

If Zane Grey is in there, it's perhaps a US list - I can't imagine him ever being popular elsewhere in the world.
