Evil Spirits from a book?

My 505 occasionally behaves oddly with some books. It will freeze on a page, refuse to move, then re-boot itself. If I get past the page where it froze, it might be fine for another 20-40 pages then freeze and re-boot again.

This seems to be book-specific. If I load a different book, this doesn't happen. When I re-load the offending book, it begins again.

These books are all .lrf format.

Any ideas why this happens?

I've had the same problem with a few books I converted from LIT to LRF using Calibre. I can't identify anything wrong with the LIT.

They all work fine on a PC viewer, but they reboot the Reader.

As far as I can remember, calibre formats the books differently than sony. An original Sony ebook is preformatted and consists of chunks for better memory handling. Calibre is incapable of reproducing that and thus ebooks require more memory and are more prone to crash the reader...

Hmmmm.... these are books that I've converted from .lit to .lrf using Calibre. But not all the books that I convert cause this problem. So far, only three out of about thirty or so. Not bad, but I'd prefer not to wait around because of the re-boots.

When I convert books, the only changes I make other than metadata are to remove extra spaces between paragraphs. I don't understand the software well enough to try to get fancy. I usually just run Calibre's default settings. (If I could, I'd remove book covers. )

Maybe try a different conversion program and see if those 3 books work better.
Or take those 3 books and convert to epub in calibre.
I had the same problem with some of my books.
And I tried different ways until something worked.
I had pdf that was giving me problems and I used different program to convert it to html to LRF and that worked.
Sometimes I found the same book online elsewhere in a different format and converted it to LRF and that worked much better than my original source.
It does suck to have to wait a minute or so to change a page.
I sometimes lately use .rtf format on 505.
How many pages are the 3 books , thousands or just a couple hundred.

The books weren't especially long ones. 300-400 pages average. I'll try a different conversion package and see what that does, although as I said, I'm not skilled with software. Thanks all, for the suggestions.

I'm wondering whether taking the book and putting it on the reader using the Sony E-book library software might help. It sorts out the pagination before the book goes on the reader.

I do that, Patricia. I convert formats using Calibre, then import the book into the Sony library, then upload it into my reader from there. That gives me a saved copy in the Calibre library and a saved copy in the Sony library. (Plus the original in a different format in two different book folders on different drives.) ((Can you say OCD? ))

I used to have this problem when downloading news to .lrf in Calibre. When I changed to converting the files to ePub the problem went away.

I've not had any crashes or freezes whatsoever with mine and I've used it quite a lot. Tend to format everything in .epub as it still looks like a book then in my eyes

What happens is the following...

When you load LRF/LRX onto the Reader using eBook Library, it does the work of paginating the eBook. It loads this information onto the Reader.

Calibre does not prepaginate LRF/LRX. So when you open any of them, the Reader has to do it and that is where most of the issues happen.

So the easiest way to do it is to use eBook Library for loading LRF/LRX. For ePub (sans DRM), Calibre is fine to use. Not sure about ePub with DRM.
