Very slow database writes

I'm giving Calibre a try today. After a few hours my library of 7500 books were imported -- sadly about 1/2 of them have the authors and titles reversed.

I see an upcoming patch will make the edits less painful.

However, the problem I am having at the moment are very slow database writes.

If I open a single entry and make a change, saving back to the database is about six seconds.

Metadata in bulk is much worse. I selected 10 records to correct the spelling of the author's name. I then selected "Edit metadata in bulk" and made my change. However, when I clicked "OK" it was a full two minutes before the changes were displayed and the GUI was again responsive.

I am running Vista 64 with four gig of memory on a 2.8ghz Quad-core.

Given the size of my library, these delays are a show-stopper as I had hoped to use the tool to quickly organize my books and enter metadata.

Any tips or advice much appreciated.

What format are most of the books?

Are you using a network drive? That is known to be slow.

I have encountered the same issue with OSX 10.5.7 and running latest Calibre 0.6.4.

what used to take seconds earlier takes minutes or even hours (I left it running to check out how long it would go). I usually quit Calibre and restart the transfer which usually fixes it. But it still takes long to process.

My books are all pdf.

That is because calibre is trying to get the metadata for the PDF. To make things go faster, goto: preferences -> plugins -> metadata reader, and disable the PDF plugin. Everything should go much more smooth.

In order of frequency: pdf, palm doc, mobi, html and word.

No.

I tried that, and also tried disabling the PDF metadata writer (since my troubles are on write, not read). Neither made a positive difference.
