Hugo nimmt diese Worte ernst - allzu ernst. Als er am Schluss das alte Siegel in eine unzugängliche Schlucht wirft, ist es zu spät. Er hat, wie seine Geliebte sagt, oder so genannten Ehre das warme, ewige, klare Leben geopfert.
