Bought prs 700

I just bought prs 700 from a online store several days ago, and I 'm very pleased with the decision (I had been torn between 505 and 700 for over a week).
I mainly use it to read pdf, it handles the pdfs I collected (technical, novel mostly text) smoothly and beautifully, but don't expect to read comic books/magzines on it, pictures are rendered poorly, and it's hard to read text in those pictures.
As for the screen(allegedly the Achilles’ heel of prs 700), since it's my first ereader, it doesn't bother me that much, but I do feel it's a little bit hard to read in a dim light, and this is when the led lights come into play, they light the screen unevenly (goes dimmer from frame to center), but they do help reading.

Enjoy your new toy! I have the 505 with the lightwedge, which is really very similar to the 700 and I use the light sometimes during the day it's always nice to have that extra bit of light.

The light is handy. You find that while it goes dimmer at the centre its unavoidable in the design and that it doesn't affect the readability. And you find that the light comes into its own when you need it most when its too bright its a nuisance but when its just not quite enough light to read the leds light the screen just right.

Having looked at the 505 and 700 there is a difference but not enough to really matter and the light makes up for it. And being able to use the touchscreen to navigate on pdfs is handy. I've found some images translate better than others. But I read textbooks where the images are already monochrome half the time.

Generally, 700 handles pdf very well, but there's a nuisance here : It can't remember your zoom configuration, you have to set zoom configuration every page. It's fine if you have to digest the page thoroughly, but it's a little annoying if you just flip through.
the way I read pdf (mostly technical stuff)
1, set to lanscape orientation.
2, press zoom button.
3, touch zoom tool.
4, touch plus sign to zoom in several times (depending on the original text size).
5, touch to navigate in the same page.
6, press next page button to quit zoom (still in the same page).
7, press next page button to go to the next page.
8, repeat step 2 to step 7 to read next page.

as you can see, some times those redundant steps really can be a pain in the posterior. I really hope sony release a firmware to fix it in the near future, also a dictionary would be nicer.

There is a dictionary available if you search the forums there are a few threads on it and you can get a dictionary in epub or lrf.

I tried the dictionary you mentioned, but I don't think this is the one I've had in mind.
It's slow, unhandy, you have to open it like a regular book and use search function to find the word, and it seems take forever to make a hit (or did I do it wrong ?).
I've owned a casio EW-V2500L dictionary, it can read text. you can actually select any word in the text, and press a display button, then there comes the explanation, you don't have to type the same word again, and it's fast.
I guess when I said wanting a dictionary, may be it's more like a integrated dictionary performing like what casio EW-V2500L does.

Ah, you just found the 2nd Achilles’ heel of PRS-700!

BTW- welcome to the forum! I have the Sony PRS-700 and it is my first ebook reader, as well. I do love mine! But, I sure wish it had that integrated dictionary you spoke of! But I do have the free Webster's 1913 dictionary and I've been able to find every word I've looked up.

It is somewhat of a let down but I use a dictionary so little it makes no difference to me its been a long time since I have had to use even my paper dictionary.

Maybe it will arrive in a firmware update its certainly within the hardware capabilities. You should email sony about it if enough people make it known they want that feature its in their interest to provide. Till then though we just have to live with the dictionary as books and use the search function.
