Argh! Geographically restricted!!!!

WTF?

I am quite happy to pay for DRM'ed material and have spent a load with Fictionwise since getting my reader, but now I hit a new obstacle - they won't sell me the book because of where I live!

What is the point of this?

Anyone in the States want to get in touch with me via PM to help find a mutually beneficial solution?

Mondays, it's always on a Monday........

Unfortunately it's not something that FictionWise can do anything about. For some books, their contract with the publisher does not permit them to supply to certain countries. Eg, if a book has different US and UK publishers, the US book cannot, generally speaking, be sold to a customer in the UK.

Don't sweat it. FW have to impose geographical restrictions, but they don't make them terribly difficult to work around. Go into your FW profile and change your country to "USA". Then buy some Micropay credits via PayPal, and buy your books via Micropay. That should work fine.

I have not yet tried it, but someone wrote recently that setting the delivery address on ones PayPal account should work, too. If you want to take advantage of a large discount, you can't pay with Micropay, and I'm going to try this next time.

I have noticed that 4 out of the last 5 books I've wanted to buy at FW have been geographically restricted - I share your pain It's not enough having to jump through hoops with regards to file formats, no, we have to deal with this, too. It's not a completely bad thing though, I'm saving money because I buy less books

:-) Thanks Harry

I was trying to buy via pay pal, but I just did as you said and used some existing micropay and it worked fine.

It makes a mockery I know. I mean if I was on holiday in New York and bought a book, I wouldn't have to give it up when I got back here because of the publishing deal. It wouldn't be too bad if the UK publisher offered it as an ebook.

Anyway, problem solve - for now...

You do not even have to use micropay. Using your regular credit card address with country USA does also work. That way you can also get the credit card only rebates.

That's even easier than changing the PayPal address. I'll have to try that next time.

Someone pointed out that changing the address or getting paypal credits works. For me what worked was going to www.booksonboard.com. I managed to purchase the book from them without lying. From now on they get my business, Fictionwise not any more...

PS: And they keep trying to label people as pirates, thieves, etc. You try to do the right thing and pay for it, and they won't take it. The Sony store is the same. So, you either pirate it or lie about where you are...

That's what I did too.

Exactly At some point I hope the publishers will get it. It's not as if I would buy the books in my home country - it's far too expensive. P-books, hardback, translated, is in the equivalent of 50-60 USD range. Usually, before I learned about ebooks, I used the library. Now I buy them because I can get books at about 15-20 USD or less. To me it's paper-back price. And 10 USD or less is give-away price...
