Calibre crashing when I load my books to the SD card
Hi Kovid,
I have a weird one for you. I'm running Calibre 0.5.14, and I have 1,475 books currently in my library. Mobile device is a Sony PRS-505 SC. OS is Vista home premium. All the contents of the library are in miscelaneous formats RTF, TXT, PDF, etc, but they have all been converted using your tool to have an LRF version also, and as I understand it that's all that pushes to the device. Up to maybe 30 books ago everything ran smoothly, and if I got out of synch, I could just dump the contents of the SD card and push again. What's happening now is that when I want to push my books to the device, I'm getting Windows App Crash messages saying Calibre has crashed and do I want to shut it down. What I think is happening is that Calibre is just taking a little while getting organzed to push a big block of books and isnt communicating, so the system thinks it has timed out. But I could be wrong. Event viewer reports the following message when this happens: Faulting application calibre.exe, version 0.5.14.0, time stamp 0x4918019c, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x00000000, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x66610000, process id 0x1404, application start time 0x01c9fbde16882444. Any ideas? Thanks a bunch for the help |

Try running it from te command prompt as
calibre-debug -g and post any output to you see when you cause the crash |

Hi Kovid,
OK that helped a lot. It pointed me to a DRMed book in PDF format that Calibre wasn't handling politely. I pulled that file out of my library that I'm pushing to the device and am re-testing. Looks like it's running smoothly now. Apparently when it couldn't set the metadata for the DRMed file, it blew up the job. here's your debug text Link hasn't been detected! Link hasn't been detected! DEBUG: Size=541 DEBUG: Reading numbers: 0 541 DEBUG: Reading XRef Section: 0 with 541 objects. DEBUG: The PDF file is encrypted Failed to set metadata for u'Glimmers (Wheel of Time)' Traceback (most recent call last): File "c:\Program Files\calibre\library.zip\calibre\customize\ui.py" , line 148, in set_file_type_metadata File "calibre\customize\builtins.pyo", line 264, in set_metadata File "c:\Program Files\calibre\library.zip\calibre\ebooks\metadata\ pdf.py", line 24, in set_metadata File "calibre\utils\podofo\__init__.pyo", line 50, inset_metadata ValueError: ePdfError_UnsupoortedFilter Thanks a bunch for the help. If I can offer a suggestion for a future release - if there's any way to flag a specific DRMed file and not load it to the device, rather than crashing the whole app. Other than that, fantastic tool. Worlds better than the one the Sony Reader comes with. And where else can you get such a fast answer to a technical question :-) Last edited by Timber; 07-03-2009 at 02:28 PM. |
