speaking of cables...

Once, soon after I got my 505, I plugged it into my phone's wall charger (same USB connectors) to recharge. It totally depleted the charge. Why is that? And how can you tell what kind of USB will work? The connections are the same, to look at. Kind of freaked me out; I thought I had broken the reader.

Using a wall charger with a usb connector doesn't work (not sure why, I've seen posts about it but don't remember the full details!). You have to use a wall charger with the little round connection, or a usb cable that connects the reader to the computer to charge it.

I think leaving the reader connected to a computer when the computer is asleep/switched off may also reduce the charge, but I've never tried that

Grace, if you don't have an AC Adapter, I highly recommend you get one. They charge up the reader twice as fast as the USB cable and you can read while it's charging. You can also get an iGo AA Battery powered charger. That's handy when you travel a lot and is no bigger than a deck of cards so you can toss it in your carry on bag.

But she'll still need a new USB cable to put content on her Reader.

Thanks for the info! I do have the USB for the computer, and I normally do charge it that way (while downloading books). I did get a wall charger with the device, but my husband lost it (amongst his zillion other cords). I am a little embarassed to note that I didn't even *notice* I had a dc charger hole on the reader. That explains a lot, as to why the usb wall charger didn't do the trick. Well, no, doesn't explain it, but makes me feel better. I know I've heard the PS charger plugs work well- we do have one of those I'll try.

(and I just realized my original post said I thought I had broken the phone, but, of course, I meant the reader-- too lazy to go and fix it now)

oh, and Dixie-- :P (and I changed my SIG for you!)

As I just noted in another thread, the BEST Reader cable is a Sony PSP Data/Charger cable. It has the mini-usb connector for data transfer AND the round power plug, which will charge a Reader reliably from ANY usb port.

Charging through the mini-usb plort is unreliable, and can drain the battery. A usb cable with the round power plug will work with any usb port.
