How long is the DX booted?
Compared with 45s in DR, how long the DX can be booted and be ready to use? Also, how long to shut down?

It has a suspend mode, so approximately 1 second to turn it on/off.

For all Kindles, not just the DX, they have a sleep mode. It automatically activates after the Kindle is idle for 10 minutes. Very little power is consumed while in sleep mode unless wireless is on, which it periodically checks for new downloads and updated content. If you turn wireless off and put Kindle to sleep, very little battery is used. Typical Kindle users do not turn the device on and off routinely; they just let it sleep. Waking up from sleep mode takes anywhere from 2 - 10 seconds; the latter is typical if you went to sleep with a Topaz-formatted book open as it takes longer to re-parse and display such books. Turning it completely off and then back on takes only a few seconds more. A full reboot takes a couple of minutes.

Yes, full reboot still seems pretty slow. I'm pretty suprised actually because my other devices like the ipod touch boot/restart very quickly.
I thought by now Amazon would have made hardware changes to speed things up |

So let it fall asleep and then wake it up when we need it. And reboot the device occasionally. I am surprised to know it takes minutes, which is even longer than DR 1000s. But it is fine, we can use sleep-mode anyway. Thanks.

It it is a real sleep mode why do you need to re-parse? A sleep mode should just keep the memory status and then wake up with the same state as when it went to sleep.

The Sony takes an eternity to boot, too, but again one doesn't routinely boot it in normal use.

Harry, just a question. Before the firmware 1.5 had been released, must we turn off the device because there was no sleep-mode. I am not sure I right. Could you tell me what we do now? For example, I read a book with the DR and then I feel tired, so should I turn off the device or just leave it to let it fall asleep? If I just lave it and the device is in sleep-mode, how long does the battery support?

Sorry, I don't know what happened with old versions of the firmware - I bought mine with the current firmware installed.
If you're not going to use the machine for a while (say an hour or more) and you're not connected to your PC for charging, it's a good idea to switch it off. The "sleep mode" is low-power, but not zero power. There is an "auto power-off" setting which will automatically turn the machine off after a specified period of inactivity - I have that set to 20 minutes. |

Why are you asking me, when you have "1000s" listed as your device in your profile?
![]() Yes, it takes 45s to boot. |

En....Not have one yet, which will come this month. I am trying to make a full investigation and evaluation, though I turn to the DR. But considering the price, I hope I know the DR and the DX fully before I pay for the reader. So thanks for the reply now. ![]() |

How do you turn off the kindle DX as compared to sliding the switch which puts it in sleep mode ?
