Here is some more info from the small print:

To qualify, your application for the card must be received by June 30, 2009, and the transaction date must occur on or before August 30, 2009. Please allow 8-10 weeks from the first transaction date for the bonus points to be posted to your Sony Points account.

Wow 8-10 weeks.

So you can't actually use those points against the purchase of the reader? FAIL

Yes you can use them. You get the points for the first use of the card. So even if you just use the card to buy something for $5.00 you get the 10,000 points. You don't have to buy anything else with the card. Just wait 8 to 10 weeks to get the points and then buy the reader.
