Upgrading from QVGA to VGA PPC

As the subject says, I'm in the process of upgrading, from my trusty old h1930 to a shiny new Axim X50v (it's ordered, waiting on delivery).

As there are a few X50v owners hanging around, I thought I'd help myself wait out the delivery period by asking you guys about your experiences with VGA, and any advice you can give that will make life easier when I finally get my little present for me

I'm really interested in seeing what VGA specific software you use and/or can't live without - utilities, productivity, games, etc. Any other advice or suggestions will also be warmly welcomed (I'm keen to be prepared and get a head start).

Craig.

Craig, welcome to the club! You won't regret the buy, trust me.

Some random tips:

- you can run your X50v both in 320x240 and in 640x480 mode; switching requires a softreset. You also need OZVga];

- I usually keep my Del in 640x480 mode;

- all Resco products (Explorer, Photo Viewer) look great in VGA;

- there are still no great games out there supporting the Intel 2700 accelerator. Hopefully this will change soon with WM 5.0, since game developers can then rely on DirectX and don't need to program the Intel directly anymore. Try the two games that come on CD with your X50v - they look both impressive;

- Internet Explorer works in both graphics modes; NetFront 3.2 requires some ugly hacks to look OK in QVGA, but in VGA it looks great too;

- the latest versions of most e-book readers support VGA; for MobiPocket you need to make sure to get the latest 5.0 beta.

- make sure to get TCPMP! It does a wonderful job if you want to play DivX movies on the X50v.

Hi Christophe,

Thanks for the advice, but I went with the Axim, for several reasons, the main one price. Over here in Oz, I can pick up the Dell, 2 year replacement warranty for almost all accidents, bluetooth keyboard, extra 2200 mha battery, 256MB CF card, leather case, car charger, spare power supply, and little extras like extra styli, screen protectors, etc for less than hx4700 with nothing extra... it wasn't a hard choice in the end. I also don't like the replacement for the D-pad on the hx4700. A colleague at work let me play with his, and I wasn't fussed, to be honest. I did like the screen, though...

I will... I like playing games (playing Ancient Enemy at the moment - Diablo on a PPC, woot!)

This really excites me

As you know, I read _a lot_

ubook on an hx4700 was just beautiful. I'm really looking forward to the VGA screen (and speed increase) for reading. The wifi should be nice too (the local McDonalds have all set up wifi hotspots in the past few months, so I can surf and get fat at the same time [/QUOTE]

I've been an avid betaplayer/divxencoder user for a long time, but I haven't tried TCPMP yet... I should remedy that.

Craig make sure you also check out Aximsite - it's a good starting place if you're new to the X50.

It's here!!!!!!!

It's here! It's here!

I ordered it Monday afternoon, and it was waiting for me here when I got to work Friday morning. That's fast, considering it was boxed and shipped from Malaysia.

Now to play with my new toy.... darn charging times....

Yeah I remember that was annoying. Everyone tells you it's very important to get most out of your battery to have it fully charged initially. It was such a tease back then I know how you must feel.

Isn't the VGA screen beautiful? And once you've installed OzVGA to activate 640x480 mode, you'll be ever more impressed. I know it.

I've been spoiled forever now. I can never go back to a QVGA device

The screen on the X50v is a delight, in "large" VGA or real VGA... I haven't tried OzVGA yet, though; there's a lot of options there I'm not familiar with yet. SE_VGA is a lot easier to use initially, but knowing me I'll end up using OzVGA

This little beasty has so much my 1930 was missing - inbuilt storage, CF slot, VGA, BT and Wifi... it's just reinforced my belief that WM devices are da bomb!

And there's backup software built in to back the device up to the inbuilt storage (or card). Very nice little option, until WM2005 is out. I should check with Dell too, as I might be entitled to a cheaper (or even free) upgrade purchasing now. It can't hurt to try, anyway

You should be entitled for the free upgrade; at least those US customers are who just recently bought the X50v.

cbarnett,

When you said Ancient Enemy, did you mean Ancient Evil?

next I would run out and buy boxwave screen protectors, a 1 gb sd card and the innpocket magnum case. The magnum case is worth the $45.00.

As far as software, try pocketstars if you are remotely interested in astronomy. it looks great in VGA.

Oops, my bad. I meant Ancient Evil I'm wrangling with the publishers as I type to see if I can swing a cheap or free upgrade to the VGA version seeing as I only purchased the QVGA a couple of weeks ago. Incidently, if I'd purchased it through Clickgamers, I'd have access to download both versions.... Handango sell the versions separately. Guess where I bought my copy?

On another note, I got some goodies with the dell. Screen protectors, extra stylii (?), a very nice stowaway BT keyboard, 2200MHa battery, leather case and free 256MB CF card (+ extra chargers etc). The screen protectors are a real pain to apply though.... &*%#^%&*&($#@&* dust particles....

Is pocketstars freeware?
