Missing files...

I am running into a rather frustrating issue. I recently moved from a 2 GB to a 16 GB SD. After moving all of my new stuff (about 10 GB of various files, mostly .pdf with some.txt and .mp3, etc.) onto the new SD. I then put all of the data from the other one on it and deleted the 'Sony Reader" directory upon noticing that most of the mp3s and an entire directory of books were missing. I have 4 directories I have not found files for on the reader. I only noticed this because most, if not all, of my list of books is from my huge (about 1000 books) directory, while my smaller directories of fiction (what I was looking for) and radio stuff (the next thing I looked for) then my physics and IT stuff were not listed.

I just wanted to let my wife read some stories that I put on the reader to show her how much easier it is on the eyes than a computer screen. I have a secret agenda. Both my wife and daughter read a lot, and although I love my wall of books, my daughter's books being everywhere is starting to bother me and my wife, so I want to convince my wife that we need 2 more ebook readers.

Anyone else had this problem or have any ideas?

back up the card,
format the card
make sure there are no database files in the back up, and put the back up back on the card and reinsert in the reader.

that has seemed to work for other people. I don't have more than 100 or so books on my reader though and I don't use a memory card

I use a synchro tool on Linux called grsync everytime I upload a file on my SD or main memory. No more worries of this kind. Immediate backup.

I do not keep any calibre files.

I have a similar issue.

I have over 1000 PDF books (mostly technical reference manuals) and I find that, without any particular reason, files just do not show up on my list of books in my PRS-505.

This does not seem to change if I use the crappy Sony software to transfer the books (actually gets worse) or if I just copy the books to the memory stick itself.

The issue is not due to anything with the PDF's. I did a number of control tests where I took the same 100 books and copied them 10 times to the card, 5 with the Sony software and 5 with a straight copy to the memory card. There was no consistancy with the results, meaning, in no case was it always the same books being left out and the numbers varied greatly... The most successful being 80% of the books being saved (from file copy to card).

I called Sony, got almost no help other than to have them tell me that the Sony store clerk sold me a card with the unit that is not compatible (does not, apparently, suppport the Mark 2 Sony memory stick). I have since bought the old style 8gb card and still see no difference.

Having given up on Sony, I wrote my own software to generate the \Sony Reader\database\cache.xml file that is used to generate the library book menus, but the reader, upon being disconnected from the computer, overwrites my perfect xml file with a broken one that is once again missing books.

Has anyone else had this issue? Any solutions?
