Howdy Folks
I have been researching Ebook readers since a friend of mine pointed out the kindle 2. He thought that would save my precious books from my kids uncaring (or at least unnoticed) damage. So I have stumbled upon this, so far, informative forum. I think I have narrowed down my search to the bebook and the cybook. But I am open to suggestions and going to be looking through as many threads as I can. I should also mention that I have never read an ebook yet and am going to be looking to replace my physical library of many many novels. Everything from mystery to fantasy, sci-fi to historical fiction. And hopefully some tech manuals I have as well. So I guess I am also looking for advice on the best place to get my books from. Best formats and any other tech tricks I'll need to know to get going.
Well thats probably quite enough for now. Mike |

Hi Mike and welcome to MobileRead.
It sounds like you've been perusing the MobilRead Wiki, starting at the Main_Page, which is accessible at the top of every page. It contains some great information on where to buy ebooks and where to get free ebooks. There are also explanations on all of the various eBook formats and which devices use which formats. Also look at The famous eBook Reader Matrix to compare the various eBook readers. There are also a lot of public domian books that are available free here at MR that have been lovingly crafted by our members in several formats. I have the Sony PRS-505 and PRS-700 models, both of which have their advantages and disadvantages and which are cabable of reading several formats. I can purchase from most of the online retailers with a Canadian Credit Card in $US. You'll find that a lot of our members are pushing toward the standard use of the ePub format, something you may want to consider and do some research on in our wiki. A lot of our members need to shift formats in order to get the right format for their reader or in a particular style that they like. Calibre is a powerful piece of software that can convert many eBook formats. I don't use it *yet*, put probably will in the near future. You may also wish to look up the implications of DRM (Digital Rights Management) and it's implications on the eBook reader and formats that you choose. I'm unfamiliar with the BeBook or Cybook but I'm sure there are lots of members here that are and will answer any questions you have. It's always a pleasure to welcome another Canadian to MobileRead. WDE (WedDogEared) *note* these sock puppets are somewhat of an inside joke and we will return to our regular avatars, often cats and dogs, within the next week. WDE Thanks for the pointers and the directions to the wiki. It has been very useful. I am an very experienced computer tech but my speciality is in the hardware not the software end. I am trying to wrap my head around all of the formats and there strengths and weaknesses. When I decide to go swimming I jump into the deep end so I am sure that with some friendly pointers I'll be up and running soon. Again thanks for the pointers.
And hello to you to Ervserver |

If you're looking to replace a physical library with ebooks, there are a lot of ebooks available for download here. These are generally books that are now out of copyright so often older, but it's a good start for replacing pbooks without having to pay too much. The advantage of books on the site is that many of them are available in different formats so whatever reader you choose you should be able to find ones that you want to read.
I've had my reader for less than 2 months and I have a collection of over 200 ebooks, but have only bought about 10. I've managed to replace about 30 of my pbooks as well, with very little effort. |

Hi Mike and welcome to MobileRead. I've had a Sony 505 for close to a year and a half now and like it a lot. And I've been able to find any eBook I want in either the Sony format (.lrf), ePub or Adobe Digital Editions (ADE); including downloading books for free from a couple of my local libraries.

Again thanks to everyone. I have spent some time today looking at the sony 505 and I think it is now top of my list. Seems like a good alrounder.
I have 200+ fiction novels that I'd like to replace. I wonder how much I'd get for them at a used book store. Maybe enough to buy the sony reader. Mike |
