Cybook Gen 3 with Epub support on Thursday
The German publisher and web retailer Weltbild (Wikipedia) has announced that it will carry the Cybook and that the Cybook will have support for "DRM enabled Epub". Having looked at the product page, it appears that Mobipocket support has been dropped from the new firmware.
Weltbild also announced that 30,000 ebooks in Epub will be available Thursday, with a goal of 100,000 ebooks to be offered by the end of the year. You can find the press release here. |

presumably, only if you buy this *new* cybook (and already have mobipocket books with drm). we are still waiting to see what their promised firmware update gives.
of course, this is a problem only because mobipocket insists on being the exclusive drm-format, so if people who use mobi books are (understandably) frustrated, they should maybe let mobipocket / amazon know that. |

Wouldn't all you need, in the worst case, is two firmware versions to load on as you see fit?

This is good, right? I mean, it's either dedrm mobi or dedrm epub. I'd rather remove drm from epub, just because epub is an open format, allows larger image sizes (RE: LOTR ebooks), and doesn't require the reading device to be exclusive to its DRM format. It's pretty much the "new" LIT format.

So Amazon has not changed their Mobipocket as the only DRM policy and for Bookeen to add ePub, they have to remove Mobipocket support. It also looks like Mobipocket support is gone and even removing the DRM, you will no longer be able to read them in Mobipocket unless you convert to ePub.
Hello Calibre, you have work to do. |

Does this information carry any implications towards the release of the fw update like that it's going to happen really soon? If I understand it correctly this will be our first opportunity to see the new fw in the wild.

If they do drop DRMed Mobipocket format, I hope they keep non-DRM Mobipocket support. But if even that goes, it won't be long before we have a really good Mobipocket->ePUB conversion. Having already de-DRMed my collection, converting to ePUB wouldn't be a great hardship.
I wonder what they'll do about dictionary support. Quote:

Mobipocket could have taken over as the defacto standard if they had allowed Sony to handle Mobipocket eBooks (with DRM). But they didn't since sony already had DRM on board. Looks like another loss for Mobipocket in the works.
