I've just broken my Cybook

I'm away from home in Melbourne right now, and have just broken my Cybook. I had it in the side pocket of my jacket, and sat down badly in a chair, and inadvertently put tension pressure on it between my hip and the side of the chair.

As soon as I turned it on I saw that the upper part of the screen was mostly covered by horizontal lines, and the rest of the upper part of the screen showed inverted text. The lower 60% of the screen was not affected, but of course one can't read a book like that. The lines and inverted text still show even when it's turned off.

So I've ordered a new one from Dymock's online for $599 AuD, but may not get it for six weeks. I don't know how I'll cope.

This kind of thing must have happened to others, so I'd like some advice on how I get my current library (all on the flash card and all backed up) to read on my new Cybook when it arrives. There shouldn't be any problem with non DRM books, but I think I'll either have to remove the DRM from those books which have it, or download them again if the vendor will let me change the PID.

Any other suggestions?

Regards, Alex

Oh no!

You can have up to 4 Mobipocket device PIDs registered, so you might be able to add the new one then deal with deleting the old one.

A bit late for you now, but...

You could have your Cybook screen replaced by Bookeen for less than AUD300.00 (132.60 Euros + courier fee to France).

Readers Feast bookstore (corner Bourke and Swanston St Melb) has Cybooks in stock now and sells them over the counter. Same prices as Dymocks and DA Direct, but no courier fees and no waiting.

Hi Alex,

Very sorry to hear of your unfortunate accident .

As cbell says, Bookeen will replace the screen for €120, so that would certainly be your least expensive option. From what I've read, it's generally a pretty rapid service, too.

If you do go ahead with the new one, you'll need to wait until you get it, and then log on to the web site of the vendors you've bought your books from, add the PID of your new CyBook, and re-download the file.

Commiserations. My wife's CyBook broke recently - it's very distressing.

Bookeen will replace the screen, but the postage costs to/from Australia might make it too expensive - but worth emailing them to find out. They'll give you a RMA number, and you post it back to them. They replace the screen, charge your credit card, and send it back.

Probably cheaper than a new machine, and if that five to six weeks is accurate, possibly faster!

Yeah, bookeen can be fast in replacing screens.

As for the drm stuff, google for mobiDeDrm Will spare you the anoyance of having to add the new pid and re-download all you E-books.

Damn! I wish I'd known that yesterday. I just got home to Launceston this afternoon. I was on Bourke Street yesterday, but not on the corner with Swanston Street.

I'll google Reader's Feast bookstore or phone them, and see if I can get one from there and cancel the Dymocks order.

And I wish I'd thought of the option of getting the screen repaired.

Regards, Alex

PS. I now know how to use the program which must not be named to remove DRM, and tested it again while waiting at the airport. If I go with the option of buying a new one I'll remove all DRMs.

Regards, Alex
